As we continue to prepare for the erection of one of Europe’s largest-ever decarbonization projects, a first-of-its-kind direct reduction hydrogen plant for thyssenkrupp Steel in Duisburg, we were pleased to welcome members of the senior leadership of DF-Duro Felguera, who we have contracted as a partner in the erection of the Open Bath Furnaces.   As the EPC contractor, SMS is responsible for the overall engineering, material procurement and construction of this mega-project, which will be a major contributor to the #greentransformation of the European steel industry, saving up to 3.5 million tonnes of CO² annually and significantly contributing to Germany’s climate goals.   #sustainability #greensteel #turningmetalsgreen

Developing young talents and driving innovation 🚀   In 2023, we launched our first global trainee program, starting with the Long Products department and planning to expand further. This initiative highlights our dedication to nurturing young talent and driving innovation in the metals industry. 🌟   In August 2023, 13 trainees from Italy, India, China, and Germany embarked on a journey with SMS, focusing on innovative thinking and problem-solving.   A highlight of the program was the innovation training, which kicked off in September 2023 and focused on three key innovation challenges:   • Reducing noise levels in our plants 🔊 • Recovering energy (heat) during the hot rolling process 🔥 • Reducing water consumption in our plants 💧   Each challenge was tackled by a trainee team, encouraging creative and comprehensive solutions. The program ended in a "Shark Tank"-style pitch session, where trainees presented their ideas to SMS experts.   This program not only enhanced the trainees' skills but also reinforced our commitment to developing future leaders capable of driving innovation in a rapidly evolving industry. 🔧💡 Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/g6-Xaq47  #innovation #leadership #youngtalents 

🌈 LGBTQIA+ Voices   We would like to draw attention to the importance of equality, respect and inclusion in the workplace. Today, Paul Monteith, who is part of the global SMS family, shares their story of finding their own sense of belonging at SMS. “When I look back at the start of my career, I used to feel lucky that there was a 'passive acceptance' of me as a gay man. But that is not the same as inclusion, which is about actively including everyone – with all their differences and varying perspectives – and creating and practicing values that protect their rights as individuals and put all employees on an equal footing. On a day-to-day level, this would mean working in an environment where you feel strong within yourself about your sexual orientation or identity, where you know you do not have to avoid certain situations or topics of conversation at work.   True, society is evolving fast and people may feel they are not up to speed on identity or gender issues, or they may have questions they want to ask, but all of this can be dealt with in a positive way if the right conditions are created in the workplace. We are all different in many ways but we are also one team, and being part of a well-functioning team automatically makes each member feel respected and included.
