Last Saturday we did our first walking tour of the year, Pride at Work partners can swap one of their training sessions for a queer walking tour of the city. I have a few favourite places to take tours, and at the very top of the list is Grafton Street. It’s not easy bringing a group down Grafton Street on a Saturday afternoon, but from top to bottom it’s filled with so much queer history that it’s worth it. My favourite story that I tell is the day Grafton Street stood still for the funeral of The Diceman (Thom McGinty), shops closed so their staff could watch, people took turns carrying his coffin and crowds on the street applauded till their hands were sore. For me the story is a reminder that however far we think we’ve come in terms of inclusion in Irish society, the reality is it was always there, and maybe sometimes it was just on one street, but it was a big street with a lot of people on it. Today is 29 years since Thom died, it’s worth remembering who he was and what he did.
