On Saturday night, Lisa and I were fortunate to attend a workshop for the "Loving vs. Virginia" Opera which is being developed collaboratively between the Richmond Symphony and the Virginia Opera. The world premier will be in Richmond in Spring 2025, and this session was a musical walkthrough of Act I with piano and singers.
The picture below shows Adam Turner, the Artistic Director of the Virginia Opera, Chesterfield County's own Damien Geter who is the Composer-in-Residence for the the Richmond Symphony, the Librettist Jessica Murphy Woo, along with the singers, pianist, recording, videography, and support staff.
I was impressed at how well this set of professionals came together and iterated over a week to pull this event together. What this group accomplished was very much like an Agile team, however their "sprint" was one week instead of two or three. They iterated over timing, notes, lyrics to produce roughly 90 minutes of music which was exceptional considering the team had been together for only a few days. And this workshop was essentially a "focus group" session with "users" as we were asked to send in any feedback. (There is also evidence of the team acting on feedback that they have received in the past workshops). And, similar to a product team, they have a roadmap to their "Production Release" in 2025. All amazing display of Agile practices in a very different environment.
If you're unfamiliar with the story of Loving vs. Virginia, it is, in essence, a tragic love story, and an important topic for the artistic institutions in Virginia to address. With this team, it is evident that they have passion around telling this story, an iterative process to realize the result, and fantastic talent who are all working together. All necessary elements for any successful endeavor.
Thank you to Lacey Huszcza and Peggy Kriha Miller for leading this and including us in this amazing event!
