Happy International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).
Every May 17th, the global LGBTQ+ community organises worldwide events that raise awareness of LGBTQ+ rights violations and stimulate interest in LGBTQ+ rights work worldwide, with events taking place in over 130 countries.
The date was chosen to commemorate the anniversary of the removal of homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases of the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 1990.
Here in Ireland, we’ve made great strides in social inclusion and legal protection for minorities and marginalised groups, but many still face discrimination, so it’s always important to challenge bigotry when you encounter it.
As of 2024, homosexuality is still criminalised in 64 countries; at least 12 of these have a death penalty for homosexuality. There is still much to do, but we’ll get there together.
