Imagine seeking treatment and healing in a state-of-the-art cancer and blood disorder facility surrounded by nature in a wooded setting, and offering a physician-owned, collaborative, and patient-centric approach. These components of compassionate care are why Ashley VanBuskirk is excited about her work at New England Cancer Specialists (NECS) and its new, larger facility. Designed by Page and slated to open in 2025, the new Rock Row Medical & Research campus in Westbrook, Maine, will also provide amenities ranging from restaurants to live music. As PRIDE month draws to a close, we’re aware that the work on behalf of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual community is ongoing. Our prototype for LGBTQIA+ community health needs is presented in our white paper, “The Prism Wellness and Community Center – A Model for Inclusive Design" authored by Page Principal + Senior Healthcare Planner Hilary Bales, AIA, ACHA, EDAC and Healthcare Planner Elizabeth Ulibarri: https://bit.ly/4cEnNy6 Factors such as violence, social exclusion, and discrimination have created barriers to healthcare access for many in the LGBTQIA+ community. Designing high-rise luxury residential towers that complement, enhance, and respect surrounding communities is a priority for us. At Page, we carefully consider site surroundings, taking note of local historic structures and the character of nearby neighborhoods and integrating features that blend and balance naturally with the existing built environment. Our design at the 35-story, 283-unit Luminary in downtown Austin, showcases that approach: the facade will have a mix of brick and glass, arches will vary in scale to integrate with surroundings, sidewalks will be wide in keeping with the city’s Great Streets plan, 22,000-sf of outdoor space created, and ground-level, covered porches will provide shaded, open-air respite to the public. We’re delighted to collaborate with Northland Living to bring this project to life for Austin. In the construction and design community, LGBTQ+ individuals play an integral role in driving innovation, fostering creativity, and pushing boundaries. Here's why LGBTQ+ Pride is crucial within the construction and design industry: 1. Diverse Perspectives Spark Innovation: Inclusion breeds innovation. LGBTQ+ individuals bring diverse perspectives shaped by their unique life experiences. Whether it's reimagining public spaces to be more inclusive or designing buildings that reflect the vibrancy of LGBTQ+ culture, their contributions push boundaries and inspire creativity. 2. Creating Safe and Inclusive Spaces: Just as architects carefully plan every detail of a building to ensure its safety and functionality, creating a welcoming environment for all is essential. Pride initiatives within the construction community promote inclusivity, making workplaces safer and more supportive for everyone. 3. Breaking Down Barriers: Historically, our industry has lacked diversity, but that’s changing rapidly along with the demographics of our society.
