Director of Research and Innovation

About The Role

In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for setting the strategic direction and overseeing the execution of our company's research and innovation initiatives. You will lead a talented team of scientists, engineers, and researchers in developing cutting-edge technologies and solutions that propel our organization forward in the marketplace.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive R&D strategy aligned with the company's overall goals and objectives, identifying emerging trends and opportunities to drive innovation.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, creativity, and excellence by leading, mentoring, and inspiring a multidisciplinary team of researchers, technicians, and scientists.
  • Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of all R&D projects, ensuring timely completion, adherence to budgets, and the highest quality standards.
  • Drive the development of new technologies, products, and solutions from concept to commercialization, staying abreast of the latest advancements in technology and science.
  • Cultivate strategic partnerships and collaborations with external stakeholders, including academic institutions, research organizations, and industry partners, to accelerate innovation and achieve R&D objectives.
  • Manage the company's intellectual property portfolio, including patents, trademarks, and trade secrets, identifying opportunities for IP generation and protection.
  • Develop and manage the R&D budget, ensuring optimal resource allocation and identifying cost-saving opportunities and efficiency improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, standards, and guidelines governing R&D activities, working closely with regulatory affairs and legal teams.
  • Develop work processes to ensure proper documentation and organization of research projects using project management software systems.
  • Provide project management oversight for field testing activities, strategic innovation projects, and new product launches.
  • Compose reports, updates, and present findings to the Leadership Team, Board of Directors, sales team, and clients.
  • Compile and report research and innovation metrics based on project milestones and company scorecards.
  • Lead the process for the development and publication of peer-reviewed journal articles, as well as content for external webinars or other marketing technical content.
  • Manage Stage and Gate documentation for initiatives and facilitate Stage and Gate meetings with the marketing team.
  • Develop and implement work processes for ordering and maintaining supplies for research and innovation projects.
  • Collaborate with sales, marketing, and other functional areas to support expansion sales, problem-solving opportunities, and ensure cross-departmental collaboration on key innovation projects.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred) in a relevant field such as Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or Microbiology.
  • Water-related experience in engineering, construction, or related sciences (e.g., microbiology, chemistry).
  • Proven track record of leadership and success in a research and development role, preferably within a related industry.
  • Strong technical expertise and knowledge of scientific principles, methodologies, and tools relevant to R&D.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, project management, and team leadership.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and external partners.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a results-oriented mindset.
  • Experience in intellectual property management and technology commercialization is desirable.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements and quality management systems applicable to R&D activities.
  • Understanding of potable and utility-building water systems and applications of water management beyond traditional waterborne pathogens of focus (e.g., Legionella).

Work Environment / Travel

This is a full-time onsite laboratory position working with Biosafety Level 2 organisms. The role requires flexibility to hold remote meetings primarily via video conferencing technologies for internal and external meetings. Dress code for client-facing interactions is business professional, and for internal meetings, it is business casual.
