Portfolio tip for design leaders: Unless your values/leadership style/‘how I lead’ slides are unique or clearly showing why they make you a good fit for this specific role, skip all that in your portfolio presentation. It’s a waste of time and if it sounds like what all the other candidates are also doing(which is true 90% of the time), it will make you blend in. Not good: Generic words like empathy, team building, servant leadership etc Good: Super specific values that apply to this role Better: Super specific values that are actually then evidenced in the work you will shortly present

Simple portfolio presentation tip for design leaders today: Include something about why this job. Why do you want it? What do you like about it? Don’t overcomplicate. I added one slide at the end when I applied for the Maps role. Idea is it helps you confirm what you think this role is going to be about. AND, it tells the interviewers you understand the challenges and the landscape.

GitHub makes collaboration and communication easy when it comes to design systems. We use issues and discussions to track bugs and questions, it helps us build a knowledge base. Hey guys, I'm officially moving my #D2D article series over to my personal website. My first test is to do a quick dive into the FieldRenderProps interface in #KendoReact. Turns out, in spite of the limitations, by changing my perspective and focusing on what I can do to make the most of what I have right now, the contents of the blog article actually turned out quite alright. I mean, it's not as fancy as the kind of top-notch technical articles I used to write. I have no fancy SEO plugins, or the other kinds of bells-and-whistles. But it's alright. In a way, I'm kinda glad that I don't have those things today because it provides me with an opportunity to go back to the roots of how I started as a technical content creator - writing/publishing great content. At this very point, I honestly have no idea when my situation will improve and get better. Until that happens, there will always be some kind of limitation to what I can achieve and do. That's not me being negative about my situation, I'm just being honest and realistic. But I'll be damned if I allow the current limitations to stop me from doing all I can to create the best possible work under the circumstances. I am once again filled with #gratitude as I was doing this little test run by writing something about KendoReact. With my current deep-dive into the Form component and a renewed love and passion for Telerik's products, I have chosen not to do my live stream tonight. As much as I like the idea of hosting a live stream 3 times a week, it's really hard for me to stay motivated under the current circumstances. So I'll try something a little more practical, like hosting 1 live stream per week instead. Or I'll just go with my mood & follow my mental health. I will always have good days and bad ones. So it's important to recognize that and not ignore it. I wrote this article awhile back, but still find it to be a helpful reference to share with our clients from time to time — especially after requesting a vector graphic and receiving a file titled something like 'vector-graphic.jpg' or 'logo.png.pdf'.

This article came up in discussion today with our UX Team and I feel like there's a bit of "blaming the victim" going on here... 🤔 Most of the cases the author points out are misuses of placeholder text (e.g. using instead of labels or help text) or poor design choices, like the styling looking too similar to typed values. I would argue that designers abusing the component does not make the component itself harmful for usability. We've used placeholder text to inform users when e.g. a field offers typeahead functionality or will perform a search, and I think that's helpful for the UX rather than harmful. Maybe you’ve heard about this new trend in software development that’s kind of flying under the radar called “AI”? (Jokes. I’ve got tons of them.) A phenomenal tool for us to leverage, laden with oodles of potential, to be sure, as we strive to make our products more intuitive and, indeed, smarter. Except, well, I’m not seeing a ton of that. Yet. In my role as voice of the customer, what shuts me down the quickest, AI-related feature or not, is when someone says, “Wouldn’t it be cool if we [insert cool feature idea that seems awesome at first glance]” based on nothing more than its novelty. No customer request. No research. No foundational basis in empirical observation. No consideration of how this new, incredibly cool feature will, or can, integrate with the rest of the product. Yawn. Customers aren’t looking for shiny new toys (generally). They are looking for things that will make them more productive, save time, enable better business outcomes. Spending valuable development cycles integrating a new AI-enabled feature, simply because it’s possible, for a workflow that isn’t an existing pain point and won’t make a customer’s life any easier in the grand scheme of things is a waste of everyone’s time. Exotic but gratuitous does not improve NPS scores. Don’t start by asking, “Hey, what can we possibly build with this stuff?” Start by looking for workflows that take a lot of effort or time and investigate the opportunities for offloading as much of that as possible to AI agents. I know the potential here is staggering, but that doesn’t mean we have to start by hitting nothing but home runs. Beginning your product’s AI integration journey with a few smaller but impactful improvements can not only accelerate time to value but act as a powerful learning opportunity for both your product team as well as your customers as they grow more comfortable leveraging usable and useful AI functionality in your product. #AI #software #hypemachine #customers
