  • Context is king: Using indoor-location technology for new visitor experiences

Museums and the Web: Selected Papers from MW2015

As smartphones have become more advanced and more prevalent in our society, the possible applications for these devices have increased exponentially. These new applications are often all about context and providing that to the user. As smartphones have become more advanced and more prevalent in our society, the possible applications for these devices have increased exponentially. These new applications are often all about context and providing that to the user. The Global Positioning System (GPS) has allowed location context to be established when a user has access to the sky. While this method of gathering location information is suitable for outdoor environments, indoor-location awareness has taken a longer road to maturation. From Wi-Fi implementations to Visible Light Communications (VLC) to Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), technology is starting to become cost-effective and robust enough to handle indoor-location applications. The Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA), with support from the Institute of Museums and Library Services (IMLS), is undertaking a research project to evaluate the capabilities of BLE for providing location context indoors. The IMA is investigating the feasibility of two applications for indoor-location awareness, providing the user with contextually aware data, and providing the museum with analytics about the user.

  • TourML

    - Present

TourML was created to serve as a simple and portable representation for tour content. Having a common language for this content will enable content management systems, kiosks, and mobile applications to speak a common language. Additionally, users of TourML will be better positioned to share and sustain their content no matter how the technology that we use to deliver these tours changes.

ArtNC.org was refined and relaunched in 2012. The new site features 200 of the most teachable works of art in the North Carolina Museum of Art collection. Detailed information and high-quality images allow teachers to easily share works with students. A collection of lesson plans model best-practices for integrating collection works into non-art instruction. Videos demonstrate how art impacts student learning and teaching practice. A blog details new features, programs, and methodologies. All of this content can be shared and saved within personal portfolios.

Content is searchable by 30 teaching concepts, which span grade level, subject area content and skill. These concepts (e.g., change, communication, problem-solving) are immediately recognizable to a wide range of teachers and allow them to connect with the site and its content regardless of their comfort with and knowledge about art. The concepts also relate in authentic ways to NCMA works of art and their historical contexts. As educators browse by concept, they begin to see how those concepts play out in other subject areas. The site helps them discover that art is a powerful common denominator among the disciplines. Site navigation becomes professional development, building teachers’ knowledge about how subjects connect and modeling how concepts and works of art in combination can serve as catalysts for curricular integration.

The innovative Concept Explorer gives teachers the ability to explore and create their own connections between classroom content and objects, while building skill in visual analysis and making connections. The concept maps they create become the starting point for lesson plans. The tool gently guides a teacher’s thinking about the best instructional use of an object, while freely allowing the teacher to determine how an object relates to their own classroom environment.

ArtNC won a 2012 AAM MUSE award and a 2013 Best of the Web award from Museums and the Web.

The Indianapolis Museum of Art Online Collection was designed to be the best user experience for discovering art online. By incorporating a clean, mobile first user interface approach, visitors can easily discover new information about the collection and dive deeper for more detail. The result of this work is a more streamlined user experience with an object.

One of the primary goals of the collection pages is to encourage exploration and discoverability of objects throughout the collection. The search interface provides a robust index of all data known to the IMA about the objects and provides faceting to allow for filtering of results.

The object pages provide an opportunity to showcase the imagery as well as the research done at the IMA. For objects that have a lot of content, there is now a greater emphasis on those items unique to the IMA. This includes photography, gallery labels, provenance information, related text, multimedia content, rights and reproductions information, and collection data. High-resolution imagery greets the user to start each page with zooming functionality that makes brush strokes and small details visible. In addition to the primary image for each object, additional imagery is provided encompassing different angles, frames, details and all are displayed in hi-resolution with zooming functionality. This provides the online collection with the best and most complete set of imagery the IMA collection has ever had.

To continue in the open-access tradition at the IMA, all works that have been classified as public domain are offered to download for free.

Jurors said: “A fantastic example of an exhibition site effectively showcasing and engaging audiences with amazing content. The site very effectively brings together archival materials, personals experiences and gives a valuable insight in to conserving these unique objects. There are a number of delightful interactive features which add polish to the whole experience.”
