Enhanced Sustainable Forest Management: Widened riparian buffers for enhanced habitat and water quality. In 2023, TIG and The Nature Conservancy identified a set of priority forest management practices aimed at enhancing the health of important ecological areas within our portfolio. These practices are adapted to the local ecosystems where they are applied. One of these practices is the delineation of widened streamside (or “riparian”) forest buffers. What It Means: During harvesting operations, we leave forested streamside buffers that are wider than the requirements of our third-party forest certification standard or the recommendations of local Best Management Practices (BMPs). Why It Matters: These wider buffers can play a vital role in maintaining water quality, protecting ecologically important streamside forests, and reducing wider temperature, thereby supporting aquatic biodiversity. Integrating these widened riparian buffers into our forest operations and harvest plans is just one of the practices we are implementing as part of our commitment to fostering healthier ecosystems and ensuring the sustainability of our forests.
