We’re thrilled to announce the execution of the largest known carbon dioxide removal credit transaction to date, according to MSCI Carbon Markets data, which will provide 8 million nature-based carbon removal credits to Microsoft through 2043 from our Latin American reforestation strategy. Our CSO and head of the reforestation strategy, Mark Wishnie, says it best, “From its inception, we have aimed to break new ground with this strategy, both in terms of scale and impact. We are proud to work with industry leaders like Microsoft, who are committed to purchasing high-integrity removal credits and retiring them as part of a comprehensive corporate decarbonization strategy. Microsoft’s leadership is helping build the high-integrity carbon offset market. They are blazing a trail that other companies can follow.” More details on the transaction can be found in the press release below, but huge congratulations are due to all involved, including our colleagues at Microsoft and our collaborators at Conservation International. This is the largest known carbon dioxide removal credit transaction to date and it has been an immense team effort to make it a reality. https://lnkd.in/eEUSKxEi BTG Pactual, TTG Brasil Investimentos Florestais LTDA, TTG Forestry Services, LLC, Gerrity Lansing, Charlotte Kaiser, Rodrigo Bandeira, Esben Brandi, Mitchell Kosches, Caitlin Clarke, David Duncan, Carlos Guerreiro, John Hamilton, Anita Keegan, Matheus Moura, Maria Clara Uquillas, David Cassels, Barbosa da Conceição, Cedric Rhodes, Nairam Filho, ELIEZER JOSÉ DE SANTANA, Filipe Pacetta, M Sanjayan, Mauricio Bianco, Miguel A. Enhanced Sustainable Forest Management: Widened riparian buffers for enhanced habitat and water quality. In 2023, TIG and The Nature Conservancy identified a set of priority forest management practices aimed at enhancing the health of important ecological areas within our portfolio. These practices are adapted to the local ecosystems where they are applied. One of these practices is the delineation of widened streamside (or “riparian”) forest buffers. What It Means: During harvesting operations, we leave forested streamside buffers that are wider than the requirements of our third-party forest certification standard or the recommendations of local Best Management Practices (BMPs). Why It Matters: These wider buffers can play a vital role in maintaining water quality, protecting ecologically important streamside forests, and reducing wider temperature, thereby supporting aquatic biodiversity. Integrating these widened riparian buffers into our forest operations and harvest plans is just one of the practices we are implementing as part of our commitment to fostering healthier ecosystems and ensuring the sustainability of our forests. The Ema (Rhea Americana) is a common species across grasslands, agricultural landscapes, and savannahs in southern South America. These individuals were grazing near a video camera trap video on one of our properties in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The Ema is an important species in natural and agricultural landscapes, consuming a wide variety of plants, insects, and small rodents and other animals. Here, you can also see robust naturally regenerating Cerrado vegetation in a former cattle pasture in the background.

Zackary Chaudhry, Tim Sullivan and David Cassels recently visited one of TIG’s properties in the Pacific Northwest - Noble Mountain Tree Farm, which is one of the largest contiguous Christmas tree farms in Oregon. The field visit was led by Bob Schaefer, who has been the general manager of Noble Mountain for five decades and has been a pioneer of the sustainable Christmas tree farm industry for most of his career. During their visit, they viewed Christmas trees of various ages and species and discussed the planting, ongoing management, and harvest operations required to manage a successful Christmas tree farm. They also observed a demonstration of how the trees are shaped for harvest, bound, and then wrapped for safe transport and delivery. We are proud to work with such a professional organization. Many thanks to the Noble Mountain team for hosting!

In addition to a meaningful demonstration of corporate leadership from Microsoft, last week's landmark announcement also demonstrates the potential that exists in Brazil and other Latin American countries to deliver significant climate benefits, while also supporting vibrant rural economies. As our CSO Mark Wishnie said, "With the UN biodiversity summit coming up this year in Colombia, and the UN climate summit taking place next year in Brazil, there is a real opportunity to demonstrate leadership on the global stage. We look forward to continuing to work with both public and private stakeholders to expand the impact of our reforestation strategy and to align with emerging jurisdictional programs where applicable.”

I was thrilled this week to have had the opportunity to sign the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation’s largest-ever carbon negative transaction, with BTG Pactual Timberland Investment Group, and President Biden’s Senior Advisor for International Climate Policy, John Podesta. Our $50 million commitment will help to help mobilize $1 billion for TIG’s Latin American reforestation strategy. Not only is this an important step forward for carbon sequestration at scale, but it shows how innovative sustainability-linked provisions can also incentivize natural climate solutions that deliver benefits for biodiversity and watershed protection. We are proud to be partnered with such a pioneering Fund, and we believe this is just the beginning of what’s to come from the growth story that is Brazil’s and Latin America’s bioeconomy. It would not have happened without the leadership of DFC’s natural capital investors, Stephen Matzie, Jamie Cashman, Ella De Blois, and the entire team, alongside the vision and dogged execution at BTG, with the brilliant Mark Wishnie and Caitlin Clarke in the lead, as well as the team at Conservation International, who have provided invaluable strategic direction to the Fund. #reforestation #sustainablefinance #sustainableforestry #Brazil
