We’re thrilled to see David Portillo being recognized for this award. David has played a critical role in supporting Latino/a and Hispanic communities across the Denver metro area, and we’re fortunate to have him as our Strengthening Neighborhoods & Technical Assistance Officer. The Polly Baca Social Justice Award, named in honor of Polly Baca—the first woman elected to the Colorado Senate and the first Hispanic woman to serve in leadership in any U.S. Senate—celebrates her legacy and the outstanding individuals who have dedicated themselves to the ongoing efforts to support Latino/a communities. Many organizations want to accept gifts of real estate but may not have the internal capacity to do so. On Wednesday, Rachel Spory-Leek, CSPG, our Senior Gift Planning Officer, and Steve Shineman, MBA, CFP®, Senior Vice President at Sharing Connexion, spoke about how donating real estate works and the benefits for both donors and nonprofits at an event hosted by Colorado Planned Giving Roundtable. Dawn moved to Colorado with her two daughters looking for more job opportunities and a fresh start. After a series of setbacks, Dawn and her family found themselves in a situation with nowhere to live. When Dawn was connected to Almost Home, Inc, a nonprofit providing access to safe and sustainable housing, things started to turn around. The grant application for LatinasGiveDenver! funding cycle is now open through August 15. Over the past 10 years, Denver’s first Latina giving circle has awarded close to $200,000 to support Latino/a communities across the state. LatinasGive! is changing the traditional perception of philanthropy one investment at a time. “Understanding philanthropy and thinking of it as something that exists beyond big foundations is truly empowering,” said Tish Gonzales, LatinasGive! member. Belonging Colorado, in collaboration with the Colorado Health Institute and Over Zero, has launched the Colorado Belonging Barometer - the first state-level effort to measure belonging among Coloradans. This initiative aims to capture the multifaceted nature, such as whether someone feels they have a voice, are socially connected, and are welcomed and included. “Each of us holds a piece of the puzzle and our intent is for Belonging Colorado to work across sectors to build a larger coalition for this important effort. This is one reason we’re excited to host this special fund at The Denver Foundation,” said Dr. Janet Lopez, Senior Director of Policy, Partnerships and Learning at The Denver Foundation. https://lnkd.in/gNxzxpfh

Emarie was 17 years old with a newborn, house-hopping, and struggling to put food on the table. Looking for help, she turned to The Gathering Place. The Gathering Place not only offered Emarie a path to housing stability, but also a community of support.
