Pretty sure I told the audience that every day we "fist fight the algorithms" and that "I just love yapping about social media!" 🙈 What a treat sharing the stage with some exceptional pros in the industry. HUGE thanks to Sharon Houghton for expertly guiding the panel, and Boman Farrer, Paolo Mottola, Evelynn Escobar, and Chelsea Long for the fun conversations! When women support women, we all win. When leadership is diverse, business thrives. According to research, an estimated 47% of participants in outdoor activities are women, but leadership within the outdoor industry lags far behind. My mission at the inaugural Outside Summit and Outside Festival was to strike up panel discussions to tackle the disparity head-on. 9 dynamic, high-achieving women in outdoor leadership joined me for two separate panels and I’m just gonna say it…we rocked the house! We all felt inspired, supported, energized, and amped up by each other and the energy at the festival and summit. There is such beautiful momentum in the world right now to be the change we want to see. Leadership is diversifying and women are lifting while they climb. Starting these conversations wasn’t hard, it just required outreach and enthusiasm, the rest fell into place. When something this impactful feels like it takes on a life of it’s own, then we know it was the right thing to do. Connection, conversation, celebration, and collaboration were the driving forces I felt over the weekend of events. What’s next to Get More Outside Women IN? Let’s keep the conversation and momentum going. I’m ready, are you? Thank you Outside For Business, Outside, & Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. for the space and platform. Thank you to the men and women who believe in diversified leadership in the outdoor industry. We feel you! It’s happening! These are just a few nuggets from our awesome panels- Stay Tuned for more! Amplifying Access: Closing the Nature Gap and Fostering Inclusivity in Outdoor Education and Recreation Opportunities
I’m thankful to have been given the opportunity to share my thoughts on sustainability in outdoor recreation on behalf of Trust for Public Land, but wanted to reiterate my thoughts on this platform for more clarity. Collaboration between NGO’s and the outdoor recreation industry is critical for ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background, has equitable access to outdoor spaces and the benefits they provide. When the outdoor industry begins leveraging its influence, they can help drive public support for initiatives like the Explore Act, Outdoor FUTURE (which I’ve seen very minimal support from the industry on Funds for Underrepresented, Tribal, Urban, Rural, Equity) and many other federal, state, and local legislation and ballot measures that fund parks, protect lands, and promote inclusivity in outdoor recreation. The sustainability of the outdoor industry also relies on adopting a more inclusive model in who you market to and how you operate. Even though outdoor participation is at an all-time high, the participation rates skewed towards predominantly white individuals with middle to upper incomes in specific regions. Meanwhile, the United States is becoming increasingly diverse demographically. Therefore, the outdoor industry must either broaden its customer base to embrace diversity or risk facing a decline in its success. This serves as the business justification for promoting inclusivity. Let’s reconsider what recreation means to this growing demographic of people. With evolving diversity comes a new notion of recreation and that’s a beautiful thing. Thank you Outside For Business and Outside for hosting this amazing panel. #TheSummitOFB #OutsideFestival #GetOutside #Denver #Colorado #OutdoorRecreation #OutdoorsForAll #OutdoorFUTURE

“When women support women, we all win.” - Coach Dawn Staley. Nearly half of all outdoor enthusiasts are women, yet women holding leadership positions in the outdoor industry continues to lag behind. If inclusivity in the outdoors is meaningful to you, then join me at the Outside Summit on May 31st in Denver for our panel discussion "Bringing Outdoor Women In". I'll be taking part with female leaders Sophie Bambuck, Jess Kimura, Juliet Starrett, Susan V., and emceed by Melanie (Mel) Strong. We’re tackling the tough questions on the disparity of women in outdoor industry leadership positions and why bringing more women into these positions benefits everyone. This panel will share personal stories and insights from women who are leaving a mark and paving the way in this industry. Let's #BringOutsideWomenIN and leverage the full potential of the outdoors together. A huge thank you to Robin Thurston, Sharon Houghton,Jonathan Dorn, Heather Dietrick, Laura B. Underwood, Christopher Jerard, Nicole (Nikki) Ozmai, and the entire Outside / Outside For Business Team for making this event possible Interested in attending? The inaugural Outside Festival and The Summit will be here soon (5/31-6/2)! As a first year event, we've built sustainability into our DNA, nixing single-use plastics, building an ambitious waste diversion program, collecting deep data on our impacts, and creating many sustainability touch points throughout the three days. Outside's head of sustainability, Kristin Hostetter (she/her), wrote an insightful article for Outside about how both event organizers and fans can get their groove on while keeping sustainability front of mind.
