Most of us could never actually repay the people who stepped up and helped us get our start. There’s the intangible, like believing in us and encouraging us – even when the chips are down. There are the investors who lend their financial support and there are partners who are willing to eat Ramen with us when we’re still searching for product-market fit. There are the mentors who take us under their wings, and offer advice, lab space, access to ideas and learning that ends up being crucial to our paths. Most of the time, there’s simply no way you could actually attach a monetary value to that support. The value far outweighs any dollar amount. The only real way to repay the debt is to pay it forward to whoever is coming up behind you. It’s a big reason why Excedr is so involved with Nucleate. And what I love is that I see this SO often with our guests on The Biotech Startups Podcast as well: – Volunteering to get younger generations into STEM entrepreneurship – Investing in very early-stage life sciences companies – Connecting founders with their networks behind the scenes – Offering access to join a lab, now that they have one of their own That’s a non-exhaustive list. This “pay-it-forward” mentality that we have generally in American startup culture, and specifically in the life sciences startup community, is so special.
