SO EXCITED to share this fantastic 4-part investigation into Michigan's (and especially, Detroit's) sky high car insurance, and how state lawmakers passed reforms that basically allowed car insurance companies to charge more in Black neighborhoods: https://lnkd.in/etft3T8f Markup journalists Aaron Sankin and Mo E. did this project in collaboration with Sarah Alvarez and Koby Levin at Outlier Media and this is the kind of collaboration that ✨ dreams are made of ✨. I'm not exaggerating. After working together on another investigation that affected Detroiters, Sarah came to me and asked if we had the capacity to look into something she knew had to be true, but needed help proving. Serendipitously, two of our reporters, Aaron and Madeleine Varner, loved looking at insurance filing data more than life itself 😂 (in all seriousness, they had investigated insurance companies before). We figured out a way to tackle this together, and months later, alongside a more than 10K-word methodology, an explainer about how you can best get discounts on your insurance, and an explainer on why you need to take factors like race into account if you are trying to eliminate bias, the team's work has come to fruition. A huge congrats to Soo Oh who edited this project from beginning to end, Natasha Liggett for doing statistical review and for giving us an excuse to publish cat photos in the name of stats, Joel Eastwood for the insightful graphics and design (you gotta check out the car that drives with you at the top), Gabriel Hongsdusit for his art direction and charming illustrations, and Emerson M. for his top notch copy editing.
