Our partners at the Global Fund for Coral Reefs (GFCR) shared some exciting updates this week! GFCR's executive board announced more than $25 million in additional grant funding to support projects aimed at expanding resilience efforts across coral nations. Get the scoop on these new programs below and check out a quote from our Peter Bryant highlighting the importance of these initiatives.
📣 In the face of increasing threats to coral ecosystems, the Global Fund for Coral Reefs Executive Board announces more than $25 Million USD funding to increase protection of Earth’s most resilient coral reefs - climate refugia. 🇪🇬 New blended finance programme for Egypt’s Red Sea With a major funding commitment from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with the Government of Egypt and UNDP, the Egyptian Red Sea Initiative aims to establish a landmark Egyptian Fund for Coral Reefs to leverage up to $50 million USD in private and public funding to help protect one of the most resilient reef ecosystems in the world. 🇮🇩 In Indonesia led by Konservasi Indonesia, in the heart of the Coral Triangle, the additional catalytic funding will help ensure sustainable long-term effective Marine Protected Area (MPA) management and reef-positive enterprises with emphasis on supporting local women. The uplift seeks to support at least 10 additional ventures including seaweed hatcheries, ecotourism, and sustainable aquaculture. 🇵🇭 In the Philippines, hosting the third-largest coral reef area in the world, funding will support Blue Alliance Philippines to scale implementation covering more than 100 MPAs hosting 80k HAs of coral refugia, aiming to increase the resilience of over 2m coastal community members. The funding uplift will expand reef-positive business solutions in ecotourism, community-based aquaculture, and sustainable fisheries. 🇭🇳 🇬🇹 🇲🇽 🇧🇿 In the Mesoamerican Region (MAR), the MAR+Invest programme, led by MAR Fund, received support for its second phase of scaling a regional portfolio of market-based solutions that address local drivers of ecosystem degradation and contribute to reef and community resilience, spanning Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, and Belize. 🇹🇿 In Pemba Island, Zanzibar, new funding support was included for a Blue Alliance-led initiative aiming to support at least 7 reef-positive enterprises contribute to the sustainable finance and management of 27k MPA hectares. “Without collective action at pace and scale, scientists estimate that 90% of remaining coral reefs may be lost by 2050, with dire consequences for the communities and economies they support. To face this crisis, the GFCR Coalition has established a robust portfolio of innovative, market-based solutions spanning 23 nations to protect critical coral reef refugia – Earth’s most resilient reef ecosystems.” said Peter Bryant, Program Director, Oceans, Builders Initiative and GFCR Executive Board Member. “The new GFCR announcements, representing an increase of more than $25 million USD for resilience-based efforts, will aid the sustainable blue transition of local economies and unlock greater conservation funding flows for generations to come.” Read more ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eTbc_kCd

Exciting news! #HopeInTheWaterPBS is now streaming! Builders Vision is thrilled to champion this three-part docuseries that spotlights the incredible journeys of fishers, aqua farmers, and scientists from around the world. Their work is not only protecting our ocean but helping strengthen food security for future generations. Last week, we were honored to host the Chicago premiere of Hope in the Water at the iconic Shedd Aquarium, in collaboration with Fed by Blue and PBS. The event featured a breathtaking preview of the series in the Abbott Oceanarium and a panel discussion moderated by Geoffrey Baer, where Andrew Zimmern, Jaclyn Wegner, Paul Damhof, and Barb Frank discussed the importance of sustainable seafood. A heartfelt thank you to our partners at Fed By Blue, Dr. Bridget C. Coughlin and the Shedd Aquarium, PBS, as well as the Chicago community for joining us in this celebration. A special thanks to Peter Bryant and the entire Builders Vision Oceans team who work passionately every day to save our ocean and support coastal communities. And finally, a huge congratulations to Jennifer Bushman on an incredible series and for inspiring hope for a more sustainable future.
