About us
Bay City News is a lifeline for Bay Area residents, businesses and government agencies in need of information about where people live, work and play. As the region’s only general-interest wire service, Bay City News plays a vital role in keeping communities informed, whether it be through breaking news reports, up-to-date disaster information, in-depth public event coverage, or updates on local criminal and appellate court cases. We cover the core nine-county area of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano and Sonoma counties as well as Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Joaquin counties. Bay City News journalists report on the news that matters to the 8 million Bay Area residents and businesses. Proudly independent and under new local ownership in 2018, Bay City News provides real-time reports directly to media organizations, news websites, public affairs firms and government agencies throughout the region. We also cover the big topics of the day, including housing, transportation, immigration and the environment. The Datebook calendar, published twice daily, is an essential tool for anyone interested in public affairs, politics and government with its continually updated list of daily news events scheduled in the nine-county Bay Area. Used by public agencies, media and business subscribers alike, Datebook provides detailed information on press conferences, visiting dignitaries, public conferences, government meetings and court appearances. With our affiliated nonprofit arm, Bay City News Foundation, we aim to support public service journalism for the San Francisco Bay Area. By attracting philanthropic support through BayCityNews.org, we are expanding geographic and topical coverage for millions of people across this diverse region, partnering with other news organizations, helping train a new generation of journalists, and creating multimedia tools to reach broader audiences. For almost a week, larger and larger dead fish have washed up on the lake’s shores. One dead bass weighed 3 to 4 pounds, county officials said in a statement. “We just don’t know what’s causing it,” Monterey County’s Chief of Parks Bryan Flores said. “We hope it stops soon.” Reporting by Anna Leah for Bay City News READ: https://lnkd.in/gk_UMAN9

As a ballplayer, #WillieMays is considered among the greatest; he leads the Giants in almost every statistical category, from hits to home runs. But there was a refrain amongst many speakers who memorialized Mays, who passed away on June 18 at age 93: Willie Mays was more than any statistic. And as a few thousand fans filed into Oracle Park to remember Mays alongside family and friends, it became apparent that everyone seemed to have a Willie Mays story. Heat waves and summer floods. Fires and species destruction. The evidence of the climate crisis is all around us. In her prize-winning collection, “In this Ravishing World,” Nina Schuyler explores the human response to this catastrophe in nine linked stories. In his memoir “Telltale Hearts,” Dr. Dean Schillinger talks about how he eventually discovered that slowing down and talking to patients about their lives created a bond that allowed him to uncover what was causing their illnesses. Last month, the last pop-up of Vacant to Vibrant’s second season opened. The second iteration of the program marks SF New Deal’s latest experiment in offering three months’ free rent to local businesses as they try a downtown location in a formerly vacant spot. The nonprofit partners with city and property owners with empty storefronts to support chosen #smallbusinesses in the logistics and financing of their temporary shops. This cohort expands from #SanFrancisco’s downtown to include the nearby Yerba Buena and East Cut neighborhoods. “We understand that the market is soft, but it’s hopeful that all these businesses are coming in,” said Priti Narayanan, owner of KOOLFI CREAMERY. “There is definitely power in so many of us being in such close quarters.” Reporting by Anna Leah for Bay City News READ: https://lnkd.in/guvaYrTg

Called Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operations, this new type of food permit now lets residents operate small-scale, home-based #restaurants or provide delivery and takeout, as long as the business’s gross annual sales are less than $100,000. MEHKO permits also limit the holder to selling no more than 30 meals per day and 90 meals per week. “MEHKOs also can help address the issue of food scarcity in underserved areas of the county, supplement family incomes, and increase economic opportunities for everyone,” said Kristian Lucas, Contra Costa Health environmental health director.
