Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has become the first in India to offer a biometric-enabled self-bag drop facility. Earlier, using the self-bag drop meant printing a boarding pass and scanning it to initiate the process. However, DigiYatra will streamline this process for domestic flyers. By using facial recognition, passengers will be able to navigate the airport without needing a physical boarding pass or ID.
According to a report by the Economic Times, this facility will help passengers flying on domestic flights with Tata Group Airlines from Terminal 2 of the airport can now scan their faces using DigiYatra to initiate the bag drop process.

How does this self-bag drop facility work

DigiYatra users can drop their bags with the airlines using facial recognition at Bengaluru Airport. For this, users have to select the "scan your face biometric for baggage drop" option and follow the prompts.
After that, users have to look directly into the camera for a quick scan, and the machine will retrieve their flight details. Passengers also have to declare any dangerous goods and then place their bags on the conveyor.

The machine will then generate a baggage tag (either printed or retrieved from a kiosk beforehand) and will also measure, weigh, scan, and send the bags on their way.
Passengers will also receive a receipt, and for any excess baggage, a payment option will be available soon through the machine itself via UPI. Those who prefer the traditional self-bag drop system with a boarding pass scan can still opt for that.

What BIAL has to say about the new facility

Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), which operates KIA, has partnered with Materna Group, headquartered in Germany, to implement the biometric-enabled self-bag drop facility, reports Moneycontrol.
Airport officials have also claimed that the biometric-enabled self-bag drop facility will speed up baggage transactions and reduce check-in queues.
“Bengaluru airport introduced the country's first biometric-enabled self-baggage drop facility at Terminal 2. Presently this facility is available only to passengers of Vistara, Air India, and Air India Express,” a BIAL spokesperson said to Moneycontrol.
