Nuria Fuertes and Eduard Navalles Martínez participated at the very first H2Science conference organized by SINTEF and Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet (NTNU). The conference was a fantastic event where cutting-edge research findings were discussed and presented.   Eduard participated with a poster elected as the best poster of the conference with the title “The Effect of Hydrogen Gas on Tensile Properties of High Strength Carbon Steels”. The poster provides an overview of the initial findings and methodologies that have been and will be used during Eduard’s PhD. Co-authors have been Birhan Sefer (Swerim), Nuria Fuertes (Swerim), Marta-Lena Antti (Luleå tekniska universitet), Pia Åkerfeldt (Luleå University of Technology), Caroline Klar Jaans (SSAB) and Esa Virolainen (SSAB).   The PhD is part of the FINAST project an initiative to promote steel industry decarburization in north part of Sweden, with collaborations between SSAB, Luleå University of Technology (LTU), and Swerim.   Additionally, Nuria Fuertes presented ongoing Swerim research regarding the hydrogen gas field, specifically focusing on the impact of hydrogen gas on the tensile properties of austenitic stainless steels at subzero, room, and elevated temperatures.   Thanks to SINTEF and NTNU for organizing this conference and contributing to the dissemination of knowledge in this fascinating and constantly evolving field.   #h2science #hydrogenresearch #materialsscience #research #finastproject

We had the opportunity to attend the HTCPM symposium 2024 – High temperature corrosion and protection of materials – in Les Embiez island, France this month.   The conference covered topics relevant for industry that goes from nuclear applications, hydrogen and syngas production, fuel cells, industrial processes, among others.   Swerim presented a poster on work carried out within the Corrosion Forum – WP High Temperature Corrosion. The title of the poster was Influence of Ni on the high temperature nitriding of high alloyed steels – Mechanistic study using Calphad- and experimental methods. Nitridation at high temperature on stainless steels is known to be detrimental due to the formation of Cr- and Al-nitrides. This work opens the opportunity to investigate the performance of wide range of materials to be used in environments rich in ammonia, which is gaining great attention specially in the metal industry.   We are looking forward to work more in the research towards the understating and different application of ammonia.   Thanks to our industrial partners Outokumpu, Ovako Group, Alleima and Kanthal for their hard work in this study.   For more information regarding our facilities and work with ammonia within Corrosion Forum – WP High Temperature Corrosion, please contact Andrea Olivas (Swerim). Thrilled to have represented our team at the WMM 2024 conference in Italy alongside Emil Rosqvist and Maria Ivermark from Surahammars Bruks AB. We showcased our collaborative research, including our advanced findings on stress relief annealing of NGO electrical steels presented by Bevis Hutchinson. Additionally, Tuomo Nyyssönen and Adrianna Łozinko (Swerim) shared posters on NGO crystallographic texture and precipitation analysis with LSI methods. The conference was filled with good discussions and interesting presentations, highlighting a promising future for electrical steel technology. Special thanks to RINA for organizing a fantastic event and to our colleagues at Surahammar for their partnership and dedication. #wmm2024 #electricalsteel #collaboration #innovation #research

We have had an intensive week of trials in the pilot facilities at Swerim. This has been an important step on the journey towards the production of two valuable products from what is now considered hazardous waste. The aim of the trials has been clear: salt from aluminium smelting at Stena Aluminium will be recovered and recycled to aluminium production. In addition to the salt, the treated slag will also be useful. The expectation is that this can be used in the steel industry. The trials are part of the four-year, EU-funded Horizon project, RecAL. In total there are 19 project partners from throughout Europe, but Swerim, Stena Aluminium and British @Altek Europe have partnered specifically for this particular piece of the puzzle. "Coming here is always fascinating and impressive. Here, engineering specialists with the right expertise and industrial experience carry out the research in pilot scale," says Ola Falk, process development manager at Stena Aluminium. "Here at Swerim, after the trial week, work will focus on testing the quality of the treated slag and finding ways of upgrading it as a product for industry," explains Ulf Sjöström, project manager at Swerim. He also notes that it is an intensive week for personnel at the research institute. "We have round-the-clock manning for about a week and everything went according to plan." Also on hand for the week of trials were representatives from the British company ALTEK Europe, a major provider of services to the aluminium industry. They were here to see how the technical solutions for recovering the salt can be further improved, since trials will be scaled up from pilot to industrial scale. The quality of the salt will also be tested. "I have been ll be taking samples of the salt from the trials in Luleå to the laboratory in the UK," says Gigi N., chemical engineer and salt specialist in the aluminium industry. Considering her normal work environment, the visit to Swerim has made a big impression. "Since I work in a lab, it is rather unusual and quite impressive to see how research is done in a near-industrial-scale setting." For more information about the RecALom project, contact Ulf Sjöström, Swerim. From left: Gigi Nicolson, ALTEK Europe; Benjamin Brash and Ola Falk, Stena Aluminium; Ulf Sjöström, Swerim and Adele Forrest, Altek Europe. Absent: Rob Morello, project manager at Altek Europe. #research #aluminium #salt
