In a 'blackboard puzzle' a set of numbers is transformed according to certain rules. The current set of numbers is described as numbers being written on a blackboard. A modification of the number set is described by erasing numbers and/or writing new numbers onto the blackboard.

Typical goals in typical blackboard puzzles are

  • to get the board into a certain state, e.g. "all numbers below 20" or "no even numbers"
  • to maximize or to minimize the last remaining number.
