Henning Larsen Architects Crafts Wooden Experience Center in Gothenburg for Volvo Group - architecture: Henning Larsen - images @kvant.1 At World of #Volvo, native #Swedish landscapes and the right to roam take center stage. The new experience centre will unite Volvo Group and Volvo Cars to share the history, tradition, and future of the famed Swedish brand in a single structure entirely built in wood. World of Volvo’s #timber #construction is at once the most forward-facing and most traditional element of the project. While Sweden (like many Nordic countries) has a long tradition of timber construction, World of Volvo takes a decidedly modern approach. The beams and columns are built from #glulam timber, a #wood product that constitutes multiple layers of dimensional #lumber bonded by a durable moisture-resistant structural adhesive. Computer-controlled fabrication allows the curved glulam pieces to be cut. with a high degree of precision. Rigidity and continuity in the structure is guaranteed with metal connectors that can be hidden inside the wooden members. A bold new landmark building on the site of Oslo’s decommissioned airport, for an emerging neighbourhood in Fornebu - project: Tårnkvartalet - architects: Haptic Architects + PIR2 arkitektur - images: Aesthetica.Studio , PIR2, Haptic Haptic Architects and PIR2 have won a #competition to design a new #school and cultural centre for the #Bærum municipality, creating a bold new landmark building on the site of Oslo’s decommissioned airport, for an emerging neighbourhood in #Fornebu, a peninsular area outside central #Oslo. With the plans still to be finalised, the Tårnkvartalet proposal will co-locate a secondary school for over 900 students with wider community amenities including a cultural centre, black box theatre, sports centre, library, health clinic, and skate park, alongside workshops and cafés, in a 16,000 m² civic hub. The unique building is set to create a socially and environmentally sustainable cultural centre. A new 8,000 square-foot building, known as The Commons, and a collection of outdoor spaces, establish a dynamic new entry point and gathering space for a #cultural campus containing a #museum, folk art school, and other community-oriented facilities. Aside from anchoring the site, the new Vesterheim Commons project threads together Vesterheim’s Heritage Park with Water Street, the city’s main thoroughfare. Most importantly, the new design provides a contemporary forum for the cultural center and community to look forward to their future. Marked on the street by a soaring #wooden #canopy, the new building’s public reception lobby mirrors the cozy and sheltered outdoor rooms of the surrounding park. Flexible upper-level galleries, including state-of-the-art digital facilities and a new production studio, create spaces where visitors can explore a rich collection of artifacts and artworks. Powerhouse Company builds the coolest office in Rotterdam The Floating Office Rotterdam (FOR), designed by Powerhouse Company and developed by RED Company, marks the start of the larger redevelopment of the #Rotterdam #Rijnhaven port. Within this development, FOR reflects the mission of its main user, the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA), housing the headquarters of this top global knowledge center. FOR is a vision of what sustainable architecture can be. A modular #timber building on a floating platform, with a deceptive simplicity. It combines many high-tech sustainable solutions – including a water-cooling system and solar panels – with low-tech ones, such as the passive shading provided by the pitched roof and overhanging terraces. The combination of these various solutions is an innovative take on sustainable architecture and results in a building that is natural and unforced. The wood construction, green roof, and clarity of design create an architecture that is friendly and human. In this way, FOR sets the tone for the transformation of the Rotterdam Rijnhaven port – now becoming a lively residential area. An office oasis born from reuse  and transformation. - project: Innoasis - architect: Helen & Hard - photography: Sindre Ellingse - location: Stavanger, #norway Innoasis is an existing concrete office building from  1978 with a rich history as the headquarters of the  #Norwegian Petroleum Directorate. Through the  implementation of a new #timber #structure at its core, the building has been transformed into a modern,  flexible work environment that is layered around a  light-filled, covered #atrium. The main transformational change involves turning the  old backyard into a covered atrium, forming a new,  strong spatial center. Here, a #wooden structure has  been implanted to create new galleries for circulation,  informal meeting places, and integrated green plants in the balustrades. Consisting of a framework of #glulam beams and  round, natural tree columns of spruce, the new timber  structure holds up the curved cut #CLT floor elements  and the glass roof over the atrium.
