Developing an open access terminal for liquid CO2 in the port of Rotterdam.

Over ons

Gasunie, Vopak, Shell and TotalEnergies are dedicated to develop an open access terminal for liquid CO2 on the Maasvlakte in the port of Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Such infrastructures are important in the context of the Dutch Climate Agreement and the European Green Deal. The open access hub terminal will be able to receive and deliver liquid CO2 via ships (and potentially railcars in the future) and will be connected to the depleted gas fields in the North Sea through the Aramis trunkline, a Dutch CCS project. This will make the necessary infrastructure available to all market parties, including those that do not have a direct connection to a CO2 pipeline.

🤝The CO2next project has awarded the engineering and technology group Sener the contract for front-end engineering design (FEED) services. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in our mission to develop an open access liquid CO2 storage and transport terminal in Europe. 📍 Located at the Maasvlakte in the port of Rotterdam, the CO2next terminal will provide a crucial solution for regional industries that are not connected to a CO2 pipeline and with that, offers an alternative for the transport of captured carbon. We look forward to working closely with Sener to bring this innovative project to life and support our shared vision of a sustainable future. Stay tuned for more updates as we progress. #CO2next #Sener #FEED

Proud to be part of CO2next, a critical infrastructure for the value chain in the capture, storage, and transport of CO2 in northern Europe, located at the Maasvlakte, in the port of Rotterdam. ➡ The terminal will be able to receive liquid CO2 from ships from nearby industries. ➡ This CO2 can subsequently be sent to depleted gas deposits in the North Sea for storage under the seabed. ➡ This will be made possible thanks to the CO2next connection to the Aramis project. In the first phase, CO2next is estimated to have: ✅ an approximate capacity of 5.4 million tonnes per year of CO2  ✅ and 48,000 cubic metres of storage. We thank Vopak, Gasunie, Shell and TotalEnergies once again for placing their trust in Sener to provide the front-end engineering design services for the terminal. 🔎 Want to know more? https://lnkd.in/dtCueiGK #SenerEnergy #decarbonization

𝗖𝗢𝟮𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 The European Commission has approved the awards under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) funding scheme. CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency has now signed Grant Agreements with all the eight projects that were awarded EU Funding, as announced earlier in December 2023. This is a significant milestone for these projects to advance in their implementation and to further build an open access CO2 transport infrastructure. CO2next is one of the CO2 networks projects that was awarded CEF funding and was granted a subsidy of €33 million. CO2next, according to the commission, is seen as “𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘤𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘦 𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘪𝘱𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦. This infrastructure will play a vital role in the energy transition by facilitating decarbonization efforts. Aramis will be able to connect the CO2next terminal to the onshore CO2 collection pipeline and to the compression hub (developed by the Porthos project, also co-funded by CEF), as well as to the offshore geological storage sites located on the Dutch continental shelf. 𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗢𝟮 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: It is only through joint effort that we can jointly build the much-needed CO2 infrastructure that supports the hard-to abate industries in Europe to decarbonize through CCS solutions.

📣𝗖𝗢𝟮𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗢𝟮 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗥𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗺 We celebrate an important milestone for CO2next: the project entered the so-called Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) phase. This is the project phase in the lead up to the final investment decision.      CO2next aims to build a liquid CO2 terminal at the Maasvlakte in the port of Rotterdam, that can be used by customers not connected to a CO2 pipeline to ship liquid CO2. Therefore, the terminal will be a critical piece of CO2 infrastructure which can be leveraged as part of the CCS chain. The technical feasibility and development of such CCS chain is jointly explored with the Aramis CCS project, to which the terminal is connected.   This marks another step of the Dutch ambitions for #CCS. Work is underway on large CCS projects Porthos and Aramis CCS, allowing for significant amounts of CO2 to be stored in the future.    👉Read the full news article about the new project phase and partnership here https://lnkd.in/e8HRXsu4 Vopak Gasunie Shell TotalEnergies #terminal #CO2infrastructure #CCS

Financial Times' Malcolm Moore wrote a compelling story on the kickstart of European attempts at #CCS. In this read you find different perspectives on CCS, from cautiousness to the need to have such infrastructure in place for heavy industries that are currently hard to decarbonize. It amplifies how the Porthos project is set to proof its technology as a viable way to reduce emissions, as more CCS projects are planned. These CCS projects include Aramis CCS where CO2next's liquid CO2 terminal in the Port of #Rotterdam is crucial for building the much needed CO2 infrastructure. 🤝We congratulate Porthos on the commencement of their construction phase at the Tweede Maasvlakte in the Port of Rotterdam. In the coming period, work will be carried out at multiple locations in the Port of Rotterdam as part of the Porthos project. According to the schedule, the system will be operational in 2026. A great step towards a just transition. Porthos is just the beginning of the Dutch ambitions for #CCS. Work is underway on a much larger project where CO2 from companies across the Netherlands, as well as beyond, will travel 200 kilometers into the North Sea via Rotterdam. Over sixty kilometers northwest of Den Helder, it will then be injected into an empty gas field beneath the seabed via a platform. This is the Aramis CCS project, of which CO2next (an open access liquid CO2 terminal) is an integral part. See how the CCS projects were amplified in this Dutch news item: https://lnkd.in/eC94-uuq

🛠️ 𝐄𝐞𝐧 𝐦𝐢𝐣𝐥𝐩𝐚𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐭 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐬-𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭!
