Routing Information Protocol is a distance vector routing protocol that uses hop count as a routing metric. There are currently three versions of RIP: v1, v2, and RIPng. RIPv1 was the first version, first defined in 1988. RIPv2 was added support to carry subnet information in route updates, it was developed in 1993 and made a standard in 1998. RIPng extends RIPv2 by adding support for IPv6.
