For other uses, see Saratoga.

The USS Saratoga (NCC-1887) was a Federation Miranda-class starship active in Starfleet service in the late 23rd century.

The Saratoga, under the command of Captain Margaret Alexander, transported Captain Lawrence Styles to the Romulan Neutral Zone in 2285, where he was to arrest Rear Admiral James T. Kirk. (TOS comic: "The Apocalypse Scenario!")

In 2286, the Saratoga was patrolling Sector 5, near the Klingon Neutral Zone, when it began tracking a large unknown alien probe on an apparent trajectory to the Terran solar system. Attempts to communicate with the probe were negative on all known frequencies. Saratoga was eventually neutralized by the probe's signal and rendered unable to generate its own power, forcing it to run on reserve power only. (TOS movie, novelization & comic adaptation: The Voyage Home)

In 2289, the Saratoga was to escort Ambassador Sarek to peace negotiations with the Klingon Empire; however, the USS Excelsior took on these duties. (TOS novel: Excelsior: Forged in Fire)

The ship was destroyed during the Tomed Incident in 2311. (Adventures RPG module: Beta Quadrant Sourcebook)

Background[]

Portrayed in canon, as a Miranda-class vessel identical to the USS Reliant, the Saratoga was a reuse of the model built for that earlier vessel, relabeled with a new name and registry. While backstage pictures reveal the hull number, a number of licensed sources have perpetuated confusion about this vessel, including incorrect registries "NCC-1937" (ST reference: The Star Trek Encyclopedia) and "NCC-1867" (in a collectible Mattel miniature). In a glaring error, the ship was shown just prior to The Voyage Home in DC Comics issues, but was drawn as an Excelsior-class vessel, despite having much the same crew and mission as the vessel in canon.
