The Mediterranean-class was a type of Federation starship in use in the 24th century. (ST reference: The Star Trek Encyclopedia)

History and specifications[]

The class was in service from at least the 2340s to the 2370s. (TNG - Double Helix novel: The First Virtue; DS9 episode: "The Siege of AR-558")

Specifications[]

The Mediterranean-class was a small starship compared to her contemporaries, such as the Ambassador-class. A pair of warp nacelles were slung under and to the rear of the circular primary hull. Standard thruster assemblies, phaser arrays and escape pods all featured on the class. (TNG - Hive comic: "Issue 3")

A design flaw left the ship's bulkheads structurally vulnerable between decks eight and nine, a result of an overabundance of conduit relays routed there. In 2366, 14 year old Max Thomssen discovered the flaw and reported it to his father, believing the choice of conduit placement had to do with locating nacelles below the hull. (TNG - Star Trek: Explorer short story: "The Expert")

Background[]

A ship of the Mediterranean-class, the Lalo, was first mentioned in TNG episode: "We'll Always Have Paris", but its class was not identified until the publication of The Star Trek Encyclopedia. An image of the class in the form of the Progress appeared on the cover of Progress and of the Wyoming in the TNG - Hive comic: "Hive, Issue 3".
