A starliner, liner, or passenger ship was a type of starship dedicated to transporting passengers from one destination to another; those that focused on comfort cruises were known as luxury liners or pleasure craft.

Captain Archer, while preparing for the Tellarite ambassador to arrive aboard Enterprise NX-01, practiced his potential conversation with the ambassador, were he to complain, he would say "This is a starship, not a luxury liner. If you're not satisfied with the accommodations, we can leave you behind in a shuttlepod. Maybe you'll have better luck with whoever picks you up." (ENT: "Babel One")

When Doctor Sevrin and his followers requested that the USS Enterprise take them to Eden, Captain James T. Kirk informed them that the Enterprise was not a passenger ship. (TOS: "The Way to Eden")

A Federation starliner was seized by Karnas of Mordan IV in 2319, who held sixty-three of its passengers hostage until Mark Jameson secured their release in exchange for weapons. (TNG: "Too Short A Season")

The USS Constantinople, a transport ship used as a colony ship, was referred to as a "liner" in 2365. (TNG: "The Schizoid Man")

The USS Enterprise-D herself was considered a luxury liner, at least by Captain Robert DeSoto, echoing the great attention that had been given to crew comfort in the design of the Galaxy-class, when he ask his former first officer, William Riker, if he was "getting soft on that luxury liner?" (TNG: "Tin Man")

In 2368, Captain K'Vada assigned Data and Jean-Luc Picard to the same quarters aboard his Bird-of-Prey, explaining that it was "a military ship, not a pleasure craft", hence the lack of luxury, like soft beds or Federation food. (TNG: "Unification I")

When Neelix and Kes requested to stay aboard the USS Voyager in 2371, Captain Kathryn Janeway first declined their request and stated that Voyager was not a passenger ship. (VOY: "Caretaker")
