The Laap system or Lapeerian system was a planetary system. It contained three planets: two class J gas giants and an M-class planet inhabited by the Lapeerians. The innermost body in the system was an unstable planetoid rich in radiolytic isotopes, orbiting just off the ecliptic.
In 2381, the Federation starships USS Archimedes and USS Cerritos conducted a first contact mission to Lapeeria. The Cerritos was to wait outside the system while the Archimedes approached the planet, so as to avoid alarming the Lapeerians. During the mission, an unpredicted solar flare shattered the planetoid, creating a massive debris field that struck and disabled the Archimedes. The Cerritos was able to traverse the debris field and prevent the Archimedes from crashing into Lapeeria. (LD: "First First Contact")

The first schematic of the system in the episode shows one of the gas giants and Lapeeria both in the fourth orbital path, and no planets in the second orbital path. A later schematic shows the gas giants in the second and fourth orbital paths, no planet in the third orbital path, and Lapeeria in the fifth and sixth orbital paths.
