Artemis was the Greek goddess of hunting and the twin sister to Apollo by Zeus and the mortal Leto.

In 2267, it was revealed Artemis was among a band of alien explorers who lived on Earth in ancient times, allowing themselves to be worshiped as gods. According to Apollo, Artemis was a "fellow traveler" from Pollux IV, but he later contradicted this narrative and stated both he and Artemis had been born on Earth due to a union between Zeus and a Human woman. James T. Kirk suspected that neither version was completely true and that Apollo's appearance of a Greek god had been created for the benefit of his Human visitors.

After living on Earth for a time, Artemis and the other Greek gods returned to Pollux IV. Once back on Pollux, finding the planet empty and lonely, Artemis eventually transcended physical existence leaving Apollo behind as the sole remaining Greek god.

When Apollo met Carolyn Palamas, he said he wanted her arms to be bare like Artemis, and with a wave of his hand he transformed her uniform into a revealing peplos. (TOS: "Who Mourns for Adonais?")
