Sep 18, 2014 at 16:08 comment added Greg Martin The supposed formula $N(n)-N(n-1) = 4[n\sqrt2]$ is really, really false. For one thing, the asymptotic size of the difference is $\pi n^2 - \pi(n-1)^2 \sim 2\pi n$, not $4\sqrt2 n$. Surely your computations revealed that?

Sep 17, 2014 at 21:10 comment added user2566092 In your expression $N(n) - N(n-1) = 4n \sqrt{2}$, is it the floor or the ceiling or rounded to the nearest integer?
