History

Spider Society (Earth-928B) from Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse 003

The Spider Society was created by Miguel O'Hara of Earth-928B following the Multiversal events of Earth-1610B. He would recruit several Spider-Totems from alternate realities, beginning with ’67 Spider-Man and later including Peni Parker (SP//dr) and Peter B. Parker Spider-Man, with the initial intention of forming an alliance between different Spider-Totems.

However, following the Spider Society’s apparent involvement in the destruction of Earth-TRN1042, the mission of the Spider Society became more defined. Rather than simply involving Spider-Totems allying with each other, the goal became to protect the Multiverse from any dangers, and the Society as a whole became far more bureaucratic and stringent under Miguel’s newer cold disposition. This includes capturing and containing “anomalies” that either threaten the fabric of the Multiverse or did not align with predesignated events, as well as making sure that every event in a Spider-Totem’s life adhered to the “canon”, a set of life moments that Miguel interpreted as absolute points where, should the events change, the fabric of the universe could be undone. Miguel also took it upon himself to ban further Spider-Totems that had previously caused Multiversal events from becoming part of the Spider Society (with the exception of Peter and Peni), before eventually making an exception for Gwen Stacy (Spider-Woman).

After many months, the Spider Society grew to hundreds of members, including those previously involved in other Multiversal events that they had not caused. In addition to Peter, Miguel also installed Jessica Drew (Spider-Woman) and Ben Reilly (Scarlet Spider) as his direct subordinates.

Things came to a head, however, when the villain Spot began creating Multiversal devastation of an even larger scale. Rather than contain the threat, however, Miguel instead chose to temporarily let him be so he could kill Spot’s reality’s native Jefferson Morales. He also directed his focus to Jefferson’s son Miles, the reality’s Spider-Totem whom, in his rage and delusion, he blamed for all of the other anomalies because he was bitten by a spider from another universe and the reality’s previous Spider-Man died protecting him. Determined to save his father despite the potential risk to the Multiverse, and in order to flee from getting imprisoned or killed by Miguel for possibly causing the destruction of Earth-50101B, Miles escaped to Earth-42. These events fractured the Spider Society somewhat, with Miguel expelling Gwen for her close connection to Miles, and others leaving with her to locate and save Miles.

Notes

  • According to the studio, there are 280 Spider-Totems that have membership in the Spider Society. Only 95 of them, meanwhile, have been uniquely named, either by the studio or having already had pre-established names.[4] This number was updated to around 630 (with 150 identified) one month later.[5]
