Authors may be interested in publishing their research Open Access or may be required by a funding agency to publish Open Access any research resulting from those funds. This resource center outlines the process for requesting Free Access or Open Access publication, as well as the rights associated with varying Open Access licenses.

Editorial acceptance of manuscripts is not impacted by choosing Free Access or Open Access. Free Access and Open Access articles are treated in the same way as any other article. Manuscripts go through the journal's standard peer review process and are accepted or rejected based on their own merit. The Free Access and Open Access options are offered only to authors whose manuscripts have been accepted for publication to ensure that the Free Access and Open Access options have no influence on the peer review and acceptance process. Accepted articles that will be made Free Access or Open Access are prepared just as other articles and are posted online with the full range of features associated with the journal in which they are published. All articles are archived and are registered at relevant abstracting and indexing services.

Commentaries and Editorials

Please note that commentaries and editorials are published Free Access for no charge. You do not need to purchase Free Access or an Open Access license if your article is a commentary or editorial.

Free Access

Authors can choose to publish their articles Free Access, meaning that the copyright is assigned to Human Kinetics and there is no paywall for the articles. Others are free to read your article on the Human Kinetics website. Any permissions regarding use or redistribution must go through the Copyright Clearance Center.

Copyright

Copyright in any Open Access article published under a Creative Commons license is retained by the author(s). In this case, authors grant Human Kinetics a license to publish the article and identify itself as the original publisher. Authors also grant any third party the right to use the article freely, within the parameters of the particular license.

Where content in the article is identified as belonging to a third party, it is the obligation of the user to ensure that any reuse complies with the copyright policies of the owner of that content. 

Except for uses allowed under a particular Creative Commons license, use of Human Kinetics's Free Access and Open Access articles (in whole or in part) for commercial, noncommercial, promotional, or marketing purposes requires further, explicit permission from Human Kinetics. That permission should be requested through the Copyright Clearance Center (https://marketplace.copyright.com).

If an article content is copied, downloaded, or otherwise reused for commercial or noncommercial purposes, an appropriate bibliographic citation and a link to the definitive published version, via the article’s DOI, should be maintained. Copyright notices and disclaimers must not be deleted. Any translations not covered by a prior agreement with Human Kinetics must prominently display the statement: "This is an unofficial translation of an article that appeared in a Human Kinetics publication. The publisher has not endorsed this translation."

Making Free Access or Open Access Request and Payment

Payment must be received in full for an article to be published as Free Access or Open Access. To request Free Access or Open Access, authors must complete and return the Request for Free Access or Open Access form; this form also lists fees for Free Access and Open Access.

Depositing to PubMed Central 

Some funding agencies may not require that an article is published Open Access, but may require that the article is deposited to PubMed Central (PMC). Human Kinetics does not have an agreement with PMC, meaning that Human Kinetics cannot deposit articles to PMC on behalf of authors. However, authors can ensure compliance with their funding agencies by self-archiving to PMC, where required (see https://publicaccess.nih.gov/Methods-C-D-BP).

Human Kinetics does not currently impose an embargo period for self-archiving to PMC.
