💡 #PlasticWaste Plastic pollution affects us all, especially those responsible for policy and legislation to curb it. 📃 Each year, an amount of plastic equivalent to one garbage truck per minute ends up in the oceans, with around 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris currently polluting them. Since 80% of this ocean plastic originates from land, it's crucial to "turn off the tap" and prevent plastic waste at its source. Legislators are implementing strategies such as deposit return schemes and the EU's Single-Use Plastics Directive, which aims for a 90% separate collection rate for plastic bottles by 2029 and 30% recycled content in plastic bottles by 2030. ♻️ TOMRA believes that a #GlobalPlasticsTreaty could effectively tackle the plastic pollution crisis on a global scale. As leaders in the Resource Revolution, TOMRA has proposed 10 recommendations for the UN Treaty on Plastic Pollution to enhance plastic circularity. Learn more about these recommendations here: https://lnkd.in/dsxPnh5c. TOMRA is also an active member of the Business Coalition for a Global Plastic Treaty. #PlasticsTreaty #PlasticPollution

#PlasticWaste is everyone's business, including the retailers and bottle depots who actively receive back drink containers for recycling! 🛒 Many deposit return schemes worldwide, like Ireland, follow a “return-to-retail” model, where retailers who sell beverages also take back empty containers for recycling. Retailers are at the forefront of drink container recycling, playing a crucial role in Clean Loop Recycling and deposit return by selling drinks and collecting the containers. 💚 Together with its retail and depot partners, TOMRA collects over 46 billion drink containers annually for reuse and recycling across more than 60 markets. Today's businesses are facing increasing demand from customers to take an active role in managing our planet’s resources. Check out these insights from our retail and depot customers on their vital contributions: https://lnkd.in/degxx7hz 💬 #PlasticPollution #CleanLoopRecycling

♻️ TOMRA reverse vending machines (RVMs) are more intelligent than ever – powered by the #InternetOfThings. Full story: https://lnkd.in/dcmepSgq. Marius Sommerseth, Head of Digital Products at TOMRA Collection, talks through the development of #IoT in TOMRA RVMs.   TOMRA Collection was an early adopter of this technology almost 35 years ago, with IoT today used to connect tens of thousands of its RVMs worldwide. 👩💻 In recent years, TOMRA has released digital tools and a developer portal with a suite of APIs, and previewed digital concepts powered by AI.   “When people use our machines, they see a ‘hole in the wall’ for their empty drink containers, but there is an immense amount of technology driving it,” explains Marius Sommerseth. “The amount of data we collect through IoT is phenomenal. What we have achieved to date, and the possibilities ahead, are things we could never have dreamed of when we started connecting machines using IoT.”    #ReverseVending #Innovation

#PlasticWaste 🗓️ Each July sees a global movement to be part of the solution to plastic waste and pollution. 🌏 Almost one-third of the world’s plastic packaging ends up in nature as litter, while 54% ends up in landfills or incinerators.     But, does it have to be this way? Absolutely not! TOMRA’s reverse vending solutions collect more than 46 billion drink containers across the globe each year for reuse and recycling. Sounds like a lot, but it’s actually less than 3% all drink containers sold annually!     We hope to bring the remaining 97% into the loop. ♾️ More containers returned for recycling means fewer leave the loop as litter or landfill. And, on the flipside, fewer scarce resources need to be extracted to go into the loop to produce new containers. 👍     Visit https://lnkd.in/dhdbqNrf to find out more. Everyone has a part to play in preventing plastic pollution; stay tuned as we explore some of those roles throughout July! It takes all stakeholders working together – from business to consumers to governments – to make a better way forward. 🚀     #PlasticPollution #CleanLoopRecycling

Re-turn, operators of Ireland’s #DRS, have announced yesterday their new campaign: 'Return for Children', a new charity fundraising initiative in partnership with six of Ireland’s national children’s charities. The charity fundraising will collaborate with large-scale events such as festivals, concerts, offering attendees the option to donate their bottle and can deposits at designated Re-turn bins for charity. The funds collected will be equally divided among the six charities, enabling them to continue their essential work supporting vulnerable and seriously ill children across Ireland. Together, these charities serve over 165,000 vulnerable children affected by poverty, abuse, neglect, bereavement, and serious, sometimes life-limiting, illnesses. At TOMRA Collection, we're proud to support and highlight deposit heroes, people around the globe who collect empty containers to support diverse causes. Re-turn's new campaign aligns perfectly with our mission to promote recycling while making a positive impact on society.
