About us
BeLonG To is a national youth service for Lesbian Gay Bisexual & Transgender (LGBT) young people in Ireland. We believe that LGBT young people need to be respected and cared for on the same basis as all other young people, and that when they are safe and supported in their families, schools & society they will thrive as healthy and equal citizens. To get there we provide direct youth work services to LGBT young people in Dublin and support LGBT youth groups all around the country. These are spaces where LGBT young people can meet each other, get involved in activities and see that their identities and selves are valuable and important. Because we believe that the problems which LGBT young people experience are largely due to negative societal attitudes, we also work to change these attitudes. This is done by training teachers and youth workers, running awareness campaigns in schools and youth services and working with government departments to ensure that LGBT young people are heard so that positive social change occurs.

Here's a snapshot of what we got up to this week 📸 🌈 Some of the team were delighted to attend Wicklow Pride last weekend, we were delighted to see such an amazing turn out of strength and solidarity with all of the LGBTQ+ community in Wicklow 🌈 Young people and staff attend the screening of the Reel Youth Festival 2024. Members of our peer support groups have being engaging in the Reel Youth Programme over the past few months. Reel Youth is a unique city-wide collective of professional youth workers who collaborate with young people in our services to foster and practice the art of filmmaking. The programme creates a creative and supportive environment for young people to reflect, experiment, and express themselves. This year, six youth organisations, including Belong To, participated in the programme and developed 6 films with young people based on the theme of 'The Chipper'. 🌈 To tie in with Trans Pride, we held Transboree early this year! Transboree is our annual event to specifically celebrate our trans and non-binary young people and create a safe space for them to be themselves. You can see more of what we got up to in our Instagram story highlights! 🌈 Research and Advocacy Manager, Matt (he/him) was on the panel for Shout Out's event on Trans Joy alongside Trans and Intersex Pride Dublin organiser and Trinity SU President Jenny Maguire (she/her) and Non-binary performer and activist SexyTadhg (they/them) - It's so important to have events like this in the run up to Trans Pride this weekend to highlight Trans Joy and resilience! Get to know our Family Support Worker Jen! To find out more about our family support service go to https://lnkd.in/dPAuVyVz
Jen Geraghty is a Family Support Worker at Belong To - this is her #WeAct story... “It's fantastic to do this job every day, supporting the community that I’m part of, and the community that has really supported me as well. This is a relatively new role at Belong To, it’s the first LGBTQ+ Family Support Programme in Ireland. We reached out to family organisations and parents of young LGBTQ+ people while we were developing it, to look for advice on what supports are most needed, and we launched in April. Since then, we’ve had a massive number of inquiries from parents of LGBTQ+ young people. It's a safe, non-judgmental, secure space that parents can get in touch with to ask questions and get support. We can work with them around understanding what their young person is going through, supporting them with the best language and terminology to use, and how to best meet their young person’s needs. A lot of parents are worried about talking to extended family, they’re dealing with problems in school or want to be able to use the right language, because it’s so ever-changing. Sometimes we signpost them to other relevant organisations who can also support them with specific services, and a lot of the time we provide reassurance and an open, safe space for questions. Parents have described the service as a lifeline for their family, we were able to connect them with supports they didn't know existed. It's so difficult at the moment for parents, there's so much misinformation online. But after accessing the service, families feel connected to a community, they are not feeling so alone. We have had a few parents who are really worried about “encouraging” a young person in their exploration of identity, because they worry it may be a phase. It's fantastic that these parents are getting in touch with us. I use research and talk about how important it is to affirm young people, to believe them. Acceptance is hugely important for young people – so believing them and respecting their wishes at this time can make a huge difference to them and their sense of self. If it is about changing a pronoun or accepting a girlfriend or a boyfriend - this can be hugely validating for their experience and development. My background is in social care, over the years I’ve worked in adult education, with young people in homeless services, in family support and child protection. And all the while, I was a volunteer youth worker with Belong To. When I worked in Focus Ireland, I also worked alongside Belong To in the development of an LGBTQ+ training for staff in homeless services. So, taking this role was really an ideal fit, it felt like coming home." Jen's story is continued in the comments below.

One week on from the biggest day of the year for us, we're reflecting on Pride 2024. The rain couldn't dampen our spirits as we held our Pride breakfast before leading the parade as Grand Marshall. Look back at some of these beautiful shots captured by John Ohle in Dublin City Council before we headed off to lead the parade ✊ Thank you to all of the wonderful LGBTQ+ young people and youth groups from across the country for making the day so meaningful for all of us 🌈 Find the full album of photos on our Facebook page: https://bit.ly/45P82lZ
