Questions tagged [hipot]

Hipot is a contraction of the words High Potential. It describes a pre-defined test in which a 2-lead component MUST pass a high voltage AC (usually 50 or 60 HZ) and not only survive the test but have a maximum leakage current of 250 uA AC. Typical AC test voltages include 500, 1,500, and 2860. DC testing can be used in place of AC testing by testing the item at 1.414 times its rated DC voltage. Hipot testing is done as a 'shock' or arc safety precaution.
