Just as bright, just as cool ☀️ Your roof does not have to be sloped for you to add daylight from above and ventilation into your home. Flat roofs have been around for ages, and so have VELUX flat roof windows. Did you know that a flat roof window delivers 3 times more daylight than a façade window?

Tribute to our Great Britain and Ireland colleagues, who recently celebrated 70 years of operations in the UK! 🎉   They gathered on June 28 to mark the occasion in a full-day conference at their office in Glenrothes, followed by an evening celebration in the Scottish National Museum in Edinburgh. A lot has changed since the official establishment of the business in 1954, but the high degree of dedication and commitment to transform living spaces with daylight and fresh air remains the same. 🌤 🍃 (Executive Vice President & CFO Anders Götzsche & Vice President GB&I Alex O'dell in image) Press release🔗 in comment ⬇

A roof window gives you up to three times more daylight compared to a façade window. But why is that? And how do we measure it? ☀️ More sunlight: A roof window has direct access to sunlight throughout the day, and because the sun moves across the sky during the day, roof windows receive sunlight from early morning to afternoon when the sun is low on the horizon - unlike façade windows, which can only let sunlight into your room at certain times of the day. 🌳 Less obstacles: Roof windows are less affected by obstructions compared to facade windows. With a roof window, you have a clear view of the sky, while façade windows often face obstructions such as trees and neighbouring buildings. 🎩 Higher angle of light entry: Roof windows let sunlight in at a higher angle, which means the light goes deeper into the room and can reach the room from different orientations. But how do we measure the daylight? It is measured in two metrics called “illuminance” and “luminance”, which is the amount of light received on the surface and the amount of glare reflected from a surface. These levels can be measured with a lux meter or a luminance meter, but they can also be predicted through the use of computer simulations with recognised and validated software, like the VELUX Daylight Visualizer. To determine the daylight factor, it considers: ▪️The size, distribution, location, and transmission properties of the façade and roof windows. ▪️The size and configuration of the space. ▪️ The reflective properties of the internal and external surfaces. ▪️ The degree to which external structures obscure the view of the sky. Either way, the most optimal way to gain as much daylight in the room as possible, is to combine façade windows and roof windows 👇 The images speak for themselves, right?

Solar shading not only keeps the sun outside but also blocks out heat 🥵 We call solar shades ‘passive coolers', but you should not underestimate their impact on reducing incoming solar gains thereby affecting the indoor temperature, especially during hot weather ☀️ Studies show that solar shading can lower the experienced temperature in a room by up to 5°C. By blocking or filtering sunlight, solar shading devices, such as blinds and shutters, prevent excessive solar heat gain inside the room. Reducing solar heat gain means you likely won't need to use air conditioning as much, which cuts down on energy use and saves you money on utility bills. Plus, solar shading keeps indoor temperatures more consistent and reduces glare, making your living or working space more comfortable. So, solar shading not only helps cool the room but can also boost energy savings and overall indoor comfort 👌

We are immensely proud to have presented two scientific, double-blind peer-reviewed papers at the PLEA 2024 Conference in Wroclaw last week alongside key stakeholders driving the agenda in sustainable architecture and urban design.  The recently published papers are the result of a four-year collaborative research effort on the Living Places concept together with talented colleagues, partners and industry leaders including: Jens Christoffersen (lead author), Steffen Maagaard, Kasper Benjamin Reimer Bjørkskov, Siobhan Rockcastle, Ambra Guglietti, Rasmus Søgaard and Lone Feifer.    As lead authors, Senior Sustainable Building Specialist, Lucile Sarran, and Sustainable Buildings Specialist, Nicole Di Santo, presented some of the fundamental findings from the research efforts, diving into how it is feasible to build ultra-low carbon homes with first-class indoor environments using existing materials and technologies:    🏡 'Living Places: Healthy Homes for People & Planet. A Single-family Home with Ultra-low Carbon Footprint' unpacks how the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was performed with a design optioneering tool that analyses the carbon footprint of each building component and system to make optimal design decisions. The paper results highlight that Living Places achieves three times lower GWP than the maximum threshold of 12 kgCO2eq/m2 per year in the Danish Building legislation.     🏡 'Living Places: Healthy Homes for People & Planet. A simulation-based evaluation to ensure optimal indoor environment' focuses on how simulations were used to ensure an indoor environment with optimal daylight and fresh air. These tests resulted in many important findings that impact well-being, such as optimising occupants’ circadian exposure by placing windows where they spend time in the morning.      As industry partners of this global event, we are thrilled that the presentations received positive feedback and interest from an audience of dedicated professionals working and researching within sustainable architecture and urban design exchange knowledge and practices. We believe in our proactive commitment when advocating for sustainability and taking on a leadership role to accelerate the building industry towards a sustainable future that includes daylight and fresh air.  Special thanks to Barbara Widera.   Both papers are available now to read as part of the PLEA proceedings (free access): https://lnkd.in/eD8QaWek

Flat roof windows deliver 3 times more daylight than façade windows ☀️ As flat roof windows capture light from the sky directly from above, it allows them to bring in more natural light throughout the day. Facade windows, on the other hand, are limited to capturing light from the side, which can be obstructed by nearby buildings, trees, or other obstacles, and the angle of the sun. Flat roof windows are therefore significantly more effective at maximizing daylight, and your indoor environment.
