As the shipping industry continues to transition to greater sustainability, shipowners are looking at different ways to reduce their fuel consumption and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This Riviera Maritime Media Ltd article looks at Eidesvik Offshore ASA and its efforts, which include the retrofitting of two DNV approved 1-MW ammonia-fueled SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) systems from Alma Clean Power to the Viking Energy. This month, the Norwegian Maritime Authority issued a preliminary approval for the design of an ammonia fuel system as part of the EU-backed project to refit the platform supply vessel. Arnstein Eknes, Global Segment Director for Offshore Service Vessels and Special Ships at DNV, has been appointed to the board of the Maritime Battery Forum (MBF). In this interview, he breaks down the past, present and future of batteries in the sector and how collaboration is essential to maximise use of the technology in the coming years. He says: “If we’re going to accelerate the energy transition, we must build the instruments that promote the positive change and adaption to new technology rather than waiting for something to happen. “To identify promoters of new technology and remove possible industry barriers limiting safe adoption require collaborative approach more than individual “un-orchestrated activities”. This is why I think we all can benefit from having MBF as an active organization.” Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ghDUkzi3 #Shipping #Batteries #EnergyTransition

It's Friday! So relax a bit and check out this amazing footage of the DNV-classed Mein Schiff 7 undergoing through sea trial manoeuvres in the Baltic Sea. With fast turns that are typically reserved for Formula 1 cars, the 2,900-passenger cruise ship built by Meyer Turku is put through its paces. There are also terrific shots of some of the many equipment and safety checks that are performed on vessels before they enter service. Since the film was shot, the vessel has been delivered to TUI Cruises and runs exclusively on low-emission marine diesel, with maximum sulfur content of 0.1%. Geir Dugstad, DNV Maritime’s Global Technical Director noted: “One of the most striking aspects of the maritime industry today, is the huge diversity of challenges and opportunities where our customers are looking for classification support.” And his comments come as we publish updates to our rules for classification of ships and offshore structures, helping to bring clarity to customers of notations that have a mix of design and operational requirements. Geir added: “It’s not just new fuels, but ways for owners and managers to demonstrate their own efficiencies, new vessel types to unlock new markets, through to advanced technologies like on-board carbon capture.” Read more about the updates in Renewable Energy Magazine: https://lnkd.in/eSXxH-Ms #Shipping #Decarbonization #Collaboration
