    We are in the middle of an exciting day with interested measurement technicians. Our morning was filled with theoretical information: — Influencing variables on interferometric measurements — Multi-beam interferometer for geometric error detection — Abbe-error-free measurement with triple-beam laser interferometers — Correction of geometric errors with 6 DoF measurements After the lunch break, we started with the practical exercises: — Applying the knowledge we had learned on our SP 5000 TR and SP 15000 C6 NG multi-beam interferometers — Practical implementation of the Abbe error-free measurement — Optimization of real measurement setups The discussions are lively, the questions in-depth - our participants are fully involved!     Resonance measurements on grand pianos: Precision meets music 🎹 Last week, Rudyard Urtecho and Peter Grundschok, together with our representative LABSOFT in Warsaw, had the opportunity to perform resonance measurements on a grand piano at the University of Warsaw, Faculty of Physics, Institute of Experimental Physics. 🔴 The challenge A Polish service provider for the repair and maintenance of musical instruments noticed that some grand pianos sound more pleasant to the human ear than others, even though the construction and materials used are identical. To objectify this subjective observation, the service provider turned to physicists at the University of Warsaw. 🔴 Our measurements Under the eyes of the physicists, our colleagues performed vibration measurements on a grand piano to determine the resonant frequencies that are most pleasant to the human ear. They used our LSV 120 NG laser vibrometer, which enables non-contact and precise vibration measurements in the sub-nanometer range. The SIOS laser vibrometer can measure mechanical vibrations with amplitudes up to ± 20 mm in the range of 0 to 5 MHz with sub-nanometer resolution. 🔴 Customer Satisfaction The Piano and Grand Piano Service was very satisfied with the test measurements and is now testing the use of our LSV 120 NG laser vibrometer in daily operation to further optimize the service quality and, above all, to optimize the sound and identify the most pleasant resonance frequencies. 🔴 An exciting project For us, this project was not only an opportunity to showcase our precision measurement technology, but also an excursion into the fascinating world of music. We look forward to using our expertise in high-precision vibration measurement technology for further innovative applications in the future.

    Combining theory and practice: mechanical engineering student researches at SIOS Felix Hellmann, a student at the Technical University of Ilmenau, is working on environmental measurement technology at SIOS. In an industrial environment, fluctuations in temperature, air pressure or humidity can affect high-precision laser interferometric measurements. Accurate monitoring of these parameters is therefore essential. During his 12-week internship, Felix gained valuable practical experience in the field of environmental measurement technology and calibration. Under the guidance of Dr. Ilko Rahneberg, Technical Manager, and Dr. Ralf Schüler, Head of Development, he worked on characterizing some aspects of air pressure sensor calibration and examined ways of optimizing them. On the other hand, he examined alternative pressure sensors with regard to the achievable measurement uncertainty. In some cases, the calibration process can achieve more than the data sheet values. "I am impressed by the wide range of precision measurement systems and laser interferometers at SIOS. I am particularly fascinated by SIOS' scientific claim to measure with high accuracy and low measurement uncertainty," says Felix. "Overall, I have gained valuable insights into laser interferometry, environmental calibration and sensor development at a leading company in the industry. Reason enough for me to delve deeper into the topic for my bachelor's thesis." Felix will complete and defend his thesis this summer.
