RENK test rigs for railway wheelset bearings Wheelset bearings are exposed to extreme loads at the interface between the wheelset and the bogie frame and must meet a wide range of technical requirements. In order to ensure optimal adaptation to the respective operating conditions, wheelset bearings are developed in close cooperation between manufacturers and operators of rail vehicles. RENK wheel set bearing test rigs support this development in a variety of ways, from the individual component to the completely assembled bearing unit. The RENK RDDS automation systems for test rigs can be used to simulate complete route profiles in the automatic program and thereby diagnose the effects of all major influencing factors on the wheelset bearings. RENK has been a trusted partner of the global railroad industry for decades. Sustainable test rig operation thanks to individual retrofits Instytut Kolejnictwa is the most renowned Polish research institution in the railway sector. This Railway Institute, operating for 70 years, conducts scientific and research works, as well as services (including calibration of universal masters and measuring instruments) and performs certification works in the fields of railways and urban rail transport. For checking friction characteristics of brake components, the Rolling Stock Testing Laboratory affiliated to the institute has an aging flywheel brake test rig, which has now been modernized by RENK Test System GmbH (RTS). Read our project story at https://lnkd.in/dMppvE_z to find out that a completely new purchase is not always the best solution. Existing mechanical components provide a reliable substance when checked. New control, measurement and automation technology components are integrated in a targeted and effective manner. The result is a seamless fusion of proven substance and state-of-the-art technology and thus a technically and economically optimised solution for the future of the test rig. Many thanks to Instytut Kolejnictwa for their confidence in our expertise and the very positive cooperation. RENK: 40 years of test system sales and service Today, RENK Test System GmbH (RTS) is one of the leading test rig manufacturers in the world. But what is the story behind the numbers 60-40-20? The beginnings of test rig development at RENK go back around 60 years, when the company started using test rigs for in-house testing of automatic transmissions. In 1984, exactly 40 years ago, RENK developed the first test rig on behalf of an external customer: The car manufacturer BMW ordered a very complex drive shaft test rig for the development of the new generation of vehicles. This was the start of what has now been a 40-year journey into a wide variety of industrial sectors. The number of customers for RENK test systems grew rapidly. As the sales and after-sales tasks became increasingly complex, the independent product area ‘Control and Test Systems’ was spun off from the Vehicle Transmissions division in 1986. Other customers from the aviation industry, rail transport, agriculture and wind energy also began to entrust RENK with special testing solutions. Today, RENK is the test rig manufacturer with the widest range of test rig solutions. And more about our 20th anniversary soon. Stay tuned. Would you like more information about our services? RENK mobile diagnostic system: Condition monitoring in harsh environments Today, an extensive diagnosis of military vehicles in operation is only possible at the manufacturer's workshops. Introducing the concept of mobile diagnostic units, RENK provides service teams by recording the most important system parameters on site. Advanced monitoring and testing enables a higher service level during operation and therefore increased devices availability. The system status can be recorded, damages detected or repair work checked using test procedures according to OEM specifications RENK's mobile diagnostic units can reduce repair intervals and logistic requirements. Predicted maintenance and optimized logistics result in operational readiness of military vehicles. Read more about mobile diagnostic systems at https://lnkd.in/dHA5E2pP . Interaction of testing and trials in the development and production of military vehicles Before they are finally ready for use, military vehicles have to pass a series of very complex and expensive trials in rough terrain. Hoever, by using modern test rig technology, these trials can be made more effective and shortened. Benefit from RENK's decades of expertise in testing heavy vehicles in a wide range of industries. What is mostly standard in the development of individual assemblies such as engine, transmission or wheel suspension, is often not given enough attention for the complete vehicle: the commissioning or first drives on a test rig. Load conditions or driving profiles on which the vehicle development was based can be simulated exactly and reproducibly and can be compared with the calculations made. Initial adjustments can be made and the vehicle is much better prepared for the trials outside. Vehicle failures, which often cause expensive delays or even abort the trials, can be reduced. Outdoor trials in a wide variety of terrains and environmental conditions are necessary to verify function, handling and driving behaviour of the vehicle in the future range of applications in the best possible way. But detailed reproducible tests cannot be performed outdoors due to daily changing driving and environmental conditions. However, if load conditions and external influencing factors are recorded during testing, critical situations can be reproduced later on the test rig and improvement measures can be implemented. In later series production, test runs on a end of line (EoL) test rig can completely replace outdoor trials. Standardised, reproducible tests allow assembly errors to be detected very easily. Final adjustments or checks are easy to carry out. Test rigs from RENK can therefore not only save costs, but also enable the later user to get new vehicles with a faster operational readiness and higher availability. Get an impression of the unique product variety of RENK test rigs A visit to the RENK workshops in Augsburg is always an impressive experience. At the moment, however, it is a particularly interesting sight. The assembly area of RENK Test System GmbH (RTS) is currently home to assemblies for many very different test rigs: 🔸 Flywheel brake test rig for high-speed trains 🔸 Tyre test rig for wheeled military vehicles 🔸 Motor test rig for eVTOL aircraft 🔸 Transmission test rig for military tracked vehicles 🔸 Nacelle test rig for wind turbines 🔸 Gear test rig for turbine power gearboxes 🔸 MGB test rig for helicopters Each of these test rigs, customised to meet specific customer requirements, will be prepared in our workshops and installed at its final destination on three different continents over the coming weeks and months. And it is exactly this project diversity that demonstrates the performance range of RENK test rigs. The highest demands in all areas of drive technology. And all systems are characterised by our very own signature. This is how RENK test rigs empower a safer and more sustainable future worldwide. The beginnings of RENK's test rig expertise The beginnings of today's RENK Test System GmbH (RTS) date back to the early 1960s. Around 60 years ago, RENK engineers working in vehicle transmission design in Augsburg began developing test rigs for the in-house testing of future vehicle transmissions. At that time, the concept of the energy-saving closed load loop was developed, which is still the characteristic of many RENK test rigs today. These test rigs, which were unique at the time, formed the basis for the development of the "superimposed steering gear for tracked vehicles", for which a patent application was filed in 1965. This transmission, which made steering tracked vehicles easier and increased driving safety, was pioneering at the time and is still one of the main components of modern tracked vehicles today. Today, RENK's Augsburg headquarters is home to 12 test rigs for the development and quality assurance of various transmission types for tracked vehicles. In addition, there is one of the largest and most modern megawatt test facilities for large gear units for a wide variety of applications. Testing applications, which started on a small scale in the 1960s, are now an integral part of the RENK Group's activities and the successful business of RENK Test System GmbH.
