In this podcast James Rands, senior Balkans and military capabilities analyst at Janes, joins Harry Kemsley OBE and Sean Corbett CB MBE to provide a deeper understanding of the High North, Arctic region. With climate change likely to expose a northern sea route in the next decade or so and the potential abundance of natural resources, many countries will want to stake claim on this previously impenetrable region. Rands highlights the military capabilities required to operate in this challenging environment. They also discuss the important role open-source intelligence plays in providing early-warning indicators of activity and any escalation in tensions in what is likely to become a key global strategic area. With deep subject matter expertise, global experience, and the latest technology, Janes OSINT analysts act as a trusted extension of your team to expand your focus across developing and fast-moving situations. An event in isolation is only part of what happened ... In a major enhancement to the Janes events dataset, global military events worldwide have been verified and interconnected with multiple foundational data points, including systems and weapons, organisations, inventories, orders of battle, and installations. Using Janes military events data, our experts uncovered that between November 2023 and February 2024, Japanese surveillance patrols detected 19 Chinese and seven Russian vessels. In the same period, F-15s were scrambled 21 times in response to airspace violations. The interconnections between the events data and Janes foundational OSINT enabled the quick identification of the vessels’ capabilities and roles and aircraft involved. Further links to Janes orders of battle, to locate home bases, provided insight into whether they were likely to have been forward-deployed. Patterns and trends in the tempo and locations of the activity and involvement of different vessels and aircraft over time could also be tracked. Janes unique ability to interconnect key datasets enables analysts to quickly derive the insights that support decision-making. Janes is the only OSINT provider that delivers an in-depth understanding of who is involved, why it is happening, and what the likely outcomes might be, supporting analysts as they look for indicators and warnings and carry out pattern-of-life analysis. Discover how Janes interconnected intelligence can support your mission. https://hubs.la/Q02GxMby0

On 17 June Russian President Vladimir Putin appointed four new deputy defence ministers – three taking up roles in financial functions and internal management, and the fourth in the social care of military personnel. In this Janes analysis, we look at the rising political figures in Russia including Anna Tsivileva, who, irrespective of being Putin’s niece, twice removed, is qualified for her role. We also examine how these appointments may influence political and economic stability in Russia with the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Janes provides insight and analysis for 197 countries in a familiar PMESII (political, military, economics, social demographics, information, and infrastructure) framework to understand global threats and capabilities and changes in state stability. So no matter where your attention needs to be, you can trust our accessible, verified OSINT to enrich your intelligence and provide a solid ground for your analysis.
