This week members from our Sustainability Team had the pleasure of attending Campbelltown City Council’s NAIDOC Week celebrations in Sydney. The Community Connections Day showcased local Indigenous community and businesses and included a range of activities including stalls, cultural workshops and performances. This year's NAIDOC Week theme, "Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud," celebrates the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture. The fire symbolises the resilience of Indigenous traditions and connections to the land and each other. It calls for a proud celebration of Indigenous identity, reclaiming narratives, amplifying voices, and committing to justice and equality. This theme invites all Australians to listen, learn and engage in meaningful dialogue, encouraging a society that values and respects Indigenous wisdom and contributions. #NAIDOC2024 #NAIDOCWeek

On May 28, 2024, 15 members of our Northwest Healthcare Properties - Europe team volunteered at Berliner Tafel e.V., an organization dedicated to reducing food waste and alleviating poverty by redistributing surplus food to those in need. Like many large cities, Berlin struggles with food waste, with tons of perfectly good produce discarded daily. As Germany's first food bank, Berliner Tafel e.V. campaigns against waste and poverty by collecting unsold but fresh food and distributing it to social and charitable organizations. Our team spent the day sorting and packing rescued food, preparing it for community distribution. In a single day, we successfully packed 410 bags of food for distribution across Berlin. Each bag contained essentials like bread, potatoes, apples, bananas, salad and few other items. Stephan Pristaff MRICS remarked, "During packing, I pondered, 'How much is enough if the contents of this bag need to last for one week for one person?' This experience made me reconsider our lifestyle and appreciate the abundance we often take for granted." At Northwest, we believe in practicing what we preach. Not only do we drive sustainability management for our businesses, but we are also committed to making a tangible difference through social initiatives, serving the communities we are operating in. We are grateful for the opportunity to support Berliner Tafel e.V. in their vital work and contribute to such a meaningful cause. 𝗔𝘁 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝘄𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲! 🌳   We are proud to contribute to a more environmentally conscious city by setting up beehives and partnering with Alvéole to bring nature back to cities and to have a positive environmental impact! 🐝   You might be wondering: A summer full of bee stings? No, way! Bees are really not interested in people. They only have one goal: to collect and bring back nectar and pollen from flowers within a 5 km radius of their hive to ensure the development of the bee colony.   💡 Having an urban beehive has many advantages as it is an unrivalled educational tool and a promoter of important changes in attitudes towards the environment. And it can also have a positive effect on the surrounding ecosystem. Installing a beehive in an urban environment requires minimal resources, but brings a wealth of direct and indirect benefits, particularly in a social and environmental sense. The practice brings city dwellers together, enables the reuse of an unused space and shines a light space and highlights a variety of environmental issues. 𝙏𝙚𝙖𝙢 𝙗𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙣 𝙧𝙪𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙖𝙩 𝘽𝙚𝙧𝙡𝙞𝙣'𝙨 𝙗𝙞𝙜𝙜𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙮 𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙚! 🏃♀️ 💨 On 14 May 2024, Susanne Kaiser, Jakob Wasmuth, NAQAZ REDA, and Christian G.P. Strauch took part in the Berliner Wasserbetriebe team relay race. Each team member had to run the 5 km circuit through the northern part of Berlin´s Tiergarten. Time is not the focus of the relay race, the Olympic motto ‘taking part is everything’ combined with team building and an unforgettable sense of achievement is what counts! Everyone can contribute to the team's success in their own way - newcomers taking part in a running event for the first time as well as ambitious marathon specialists. A total of 1,838 registered relay teams took part on the first day of the relay race and not only showed top performances in the race itself, but also in cheering and celebrating together. On May 4, 2024, some friends and I not only laced up the running shoes, but also opened our hearts to stand up together for a great cause.", said Susanne K. Engelhardt enthusiastically after the run. She mastered the 10 km course and finished in 1h:15min, a very respectable time! 🏃♀️ Her participation was not only of a sporting nature, but also a sign of support and solidarity. Every step counted for a good cause, as part of the entry fee was used as a donation to women affected by cancer. We are delighted to have been part of this inspiring event and would like to thank everyone who contributed to making this day an unforgettable experience. Thank you to Susanne for her participation last Saturday and her motivation to run across the finish line! Let's continue to fight together for a world where solidarity and support always come first. ☀

Earth day, that’s the day we’re all reminded of both the environmental challenges and the many opportunities facing us and our planet so we may all take action, now – people, schools, businesses, NGOs, governments – to protect our shared Earth, and ourselves.
