Our “Meet the Bees” workshop in June was a success! Schaumburg-based employees had the chance to visit our hive and learn all about our honeybees. The interactive experience provided attendees the opportunity to hold frames of active worker bees, identify the queen bee, and observe different stages of hive growth. Although the bees in our hive are known for producing honey, they do so much more than just that. We talked about the important role bees play in maintaining biodiversity through their pollination efforts. The flourishing native plant species on our green roof spaces at Zurich North America Headquarters are a prime example of the effects of healthy pollination. 🐝 Had an incredible experience at the "Meet Your Bees" workshop organized by Jad Robitaille and coordinated by Alex Yeung! It was fascinating to learn about bees and their crucial role in getting food on our tables. A huge thank you to Matthew Young (Manager, Melittologist,Educator) at Alvéole for leading the workshop and demonstrating how a bee hive functions. We delved into the different types of bees and their roles within the hive, and had important discussions on how climate change is affecting bee populations. I was surprised to find out how docile bees can be when they are smoked. Matthew even allowed us to hold a drone bee and have honey right from the comb. Overall, it was an extremely informative and eye-opening session. Did you know that bees can recognize human faces? 🐝 Just like humans, bees can recognize and remember individual faces, which helps them navigate their environment and find flowers. This incredible ability highlights the complex intelligence of these tiny creatures. To delve deeper into the fascinating world of bees, we recently held a bee workshop at Yusen Logistics' Frankfurt Airport facility. Under the expert guidance of our beekeeper, Reimund Saffian, our team gained invaluable insights. Here are some key takeaways: 📚 In-Depth Bee Education: Our beekeeper explained the essential role bees play in our environment and their significant impact on human life. We learned how crucial they are for pollination and biodiversity. 📜 Historical Insights: We journeyed through the history of beekeeping, from ancient times to the present, understanding how human interaction with bees has evolved. 🐝 Bee Behavior: It was surprising to discover how calm and gentle bees can be, yet also how they can fiercely protect their hives when necessary. 🍯 Beyond Honey: Honeybees are incredible producers of not only honey but also wax and propolis, each with its unique benefits and uses. 🛠️ Beekeeping Tools: We explored the various tools used by beekeepers for managing hives and harvesting honey, gaining a hands-on understanding of the beekeeping process. 🐝 En collaboration avec Alvéole, nous avons récemment installé une ruche sur notre centre administratif de Boucherville, marquant ainsi une nouvelle étape dans notre engagement envers la préservation de la biodiversité et la durabilité environnementale. Nos employés ont participé à un atelier interactif animé par une apicultrice expérimentée, Orianne Gürtler. Au cours de cet atelier, ils ont eu l'opportunité de mieux comprendre le fonctionnement d'une ruche et l’importance cruciale des abeilles pour notre environnement, tout en dégustant des produits à base de miel. 🍯 Pour assurer le bien-être de nos abeilles, notre apicultrice reviendra toutes les trois semaines pour s'occuper de la ruche! Merci à notre équipe de l’environnement pour avoir conduit cette belle initiative!
