We are very excited to welcome Ann Sychterz – Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign – in today’s Constructive Conversations event. Ann Sychterz will give a lecture on „Adaptive and deployable lightweight civil infrastructure“. Join us at the hybrid event! 📅 Monday, July 15, 2024 🕕 2:00-3:30 pm CET 📍 Room V7.22, IWZ II, Pfaffenwaldring 7, Campus Vaihingen, 70569 Stuttgart 🔗 visit the website for detailed information (hybrid event): tinyurl.com/intcdc240715 // Lecture Abstract Current infrastructure is designed and built such that it must simultaneously comply with all possible loads. This leads to overdesigned structures that are inefficient in terms of energy and cost. A structure that can self-identify damage, adapt, and learn for future events addresses the emerging field of intelligent infrastructure and structural health monitoring through inspiration from biology. To achieve this type of structure requires balance of structural engineering, architecture, mechanical engineering, computer science, and robotics. Deployable active structures that change shape either autonomously or remotely to accommodate challenging environments are rare. Tensegrity structures are geometrically non-linear, they are ideal candidates for studying deployable structures (youtu.be/FeXxjerleZE). Through actuation, origami-inspired structures can also be repeatedly deployed for ease of transportation and installation. The grand challenge of this work is addressing uncertainties between modeling and experimental testing for large-scale shape changing structures. To address this challenge, SMARTI lab employs optical tracking and computer vision for high-definition measurement and additive manufacturing for optimized connections. This seminar will present work on adaptive and deployable structures using sustainable materials and control algorithms for resilient infrastructure. 💡 The access data for this event is available to AdvanceAEC members. All researchers working in the field of AdvanceAEC are warmly invited to join the network. 👉 advanceaec.net University of Stuttgart, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Universität Stuttgart – Institut für Baustatik und Baudynamik (IBB) #universityofstuttgart #intcdc is funded by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - German Research Foundation #structuraldesign #tensegrity #formfinding #structuraldynamics #construction #civilengineering #architecture #machinelearning #adaptivesctructures #robotics #computationaldesign #computationalconstruction #codesign

What a surprise: the other day we found our Wangen Tower project as a puzzle in a toy shop. What a great way to get kids interested in innovative architecture and climate-positive timber construction! Wangen Tower is an architectural landmark and pioneering timber structure for the Landesgartenschau Wangen im Allgäu 2024 GmbH. Based on research conducted at the Cluster of Excellence IntCDC | University of Stuttgart, the tower is the very first multi-level, walkable building to use self-shaped, structural timber components. The distinctive expression of the tower’s unique timber structure stand as a testament to the latent design possibilities in naturally renewable, locally sourced, regionally manufactured and resource-effective timber architecture! Achim Menges has been featured in a profile article by MIT Technology Review, which examines the timber architecture and material programming research conducted at the Institute for Computational Design and Construction (ICD) and the Cluster of Excellence IntCDC | University of Stuttgart. The article explains how, instead of relying on energy-intensive mechanical processes and heavy machinery, natural material properties can be harnessed to create self-shaping architectures that reduce waste and energy use. By leveraging wood’s hygroscopic properties and computational design methods, Menges and his team aim to discover new sustainable ways of building, as demonstrated in projects such as HygroShell, Urbach Tower, and livMatS Biomimetic Shell. These projects highlight the potential for creating curved, self-shaping structures with minimal material usage and enhanced structural performance. I am very glad to announce the publication of the article “Ten questions concerning environmental architectural design exploration” in the “Ten Questions” paper series of the journal Building and Environment, authored by Francesco De Luca, Jonathan Natanian, Thomas Wortmann. In the paper, we discuss how environmental architectural design exploration provides architects and planners with effective methods and tools to improve the sustainability of the built environment, thus tackling global crises such as climate change, resource depletion, and human health. The paper gives an overview of the environmental metrics, design parameters, and data used, as well as of the optimization processes and machine learning methods, scales, and domains of application. It also proposes a taxonomy of simulation tools and methods and a classification of co-simulation and design exploration workflows, presents applications in practice, and elaborates on challenges and future opportunities. We wish to thank Prof. Bert Blocken, the Editor of the “Ten Questions” paper series initiative, the reviewers, and the editorial staff of the journal Building and Environment. The Hybrid Flax Pavilion, designed by Cluster of Excellence IntCDC | University of Stuttgart, features the first-ever hybrid roof structure of cross-laminated timber plates and robotically wound flax fiber. The roof’s undulating form consists of twenty hybrid components alternating with regular timber plates, covering a 380-square-meter exhibition space. The pavilion’s design uses advanced computational techniques, including computer algorithms and simulations, to integrate information from experts in different fields. The pavilion’s ceiling was assembled on-site in just eight days using precise prefabrication and integrative computational design. 📸 ICD/ITKE/IntCDC University of Stuttgart, Roland Halbe #parametricarchitecture #parametricdesign #pavilion #universityofstuttgart #intcdc

We are thrilled to unveil our video showcasing the Hybrid Flax Pavilion at the Landesgartenschau Wangen im Allgäu 2024 GmbH, Germany. The pavilion constitutes a central exhibition building on the grounds of the Landesgartenschau, located on the winding banks of the recently revitalised Argen River. Its design utilises integrative computational methods to seamlessly incorporate input from various specialists across different fields, bridging the gap between research and industry. This approach encompasses not only the design of hybrid fibre-timber components but also considers interfaces to conventional building elements like the façade and roof, taking into account their interconnected geometric and constructional requirements. This methodology facilitated an iterative design process, allowing for adjustments and optimisations at every stage of development across all involved disciplines. The coreless filament winding process utilised in the production of the fibre elements allows for the selective local deposition of material driven by specific structural, architectural, and material requirements. In contrast to conventional fibre composite fabrication processes, this is achieved without the need for a surface mould, as the winding frame is co-designed with the fibre element so that the element’s final fibre body emerges in the winding process as the equilibrium state of all fibre segments interacting. This project required adaptation of the coreless filament winding process to accommodate the natural flax fibre material system and unique geometric form of the fibre body of the hybrid component.
