What a surprise: the other day we found our Wangen Tower project as a puzzle in a toy shop. What a great way to get kids interested in innovative architecture and climate-positive timber construction! Wangen Tower is an architectural landmark and pioneering timber structure for the Landesgartenschau Wangen im Allgäu 2024 GmbH. Based on research conducted at the Cluster of Excellence IntCDC | University of Stuttgart, the tower is the very first multi-level, walkable building to use self-shaped, structural timber components. The distinctive expression of the tower’s unique timber structure stand as a testament to the latent design possibilities in naturally renewable, locally sourced, regionally manufactured and resource-effective timber architecture! Achim Menges has been featured in a profile article by MIT Technology Review, which examines the timber architecture and material programming research conducted at the Institute for Computational Design and Construction (ICD) and the Cluster of Excellence IntCDC | University of Stuttgart.   The article explains how, instead of relying on energy-intensive mechanical processes and heavy machinery, natural material properties can be harnessed to create self-shaping architectures that reduce waste and energy use. By leveraging wood’s hygroscopic properties and computational design methods, Menges and his team aim to discover new sustainable ways of building, as demonstrated in projects such as HygroShell, Urbach Tower, and livMatS Biomimetic Shell. We are pleased to announce the latest update of Opossum, version 3.1.1, which is now fully compatible with Rhino 8. This update addresses a critical bug where expert settings inadvertently overwrote the settings tab. Opossum, the Grasshopper plugin, offers enhanced features for optimization tasks, including: - RBFOpt and CMA-ES algorithms for single-objective optimization - Multi-objective algorithms: RBFMOpt, MACO, MOEA/D, NSGA-II, NSPSO - Performance Explorer for real-time design space exploration Opossum 3.0.0-beta as well as 1.5.0 and lower has been developed at the Advanced Architecture Lab with support from the SUTD-MIT International Design Centre. New paper "Toward reciprocal feedback between computational design, engineering, and fabrication to co-design coreless filament-wound structures" published in Journal of Computational Design and Engineering: https://lnkd.in/e5PmVYCu. Fiber-reinforced composites offer innovative solutions for architectural applications. Coreless filament winding extends industrial processes, reduces formwork, and allows for tailoring of fiber layups to specific requirements. A previously developed computational co-design framework for coreless filament winding is extended toward the integration of reciprocal design feedback to maximize design flexibility and inform design decisions throughout the process. A multi-scalar design representation is introduced, representing fiber structures at different levels of detail to generate feedback between computational design, engineering, and fabrication. Design methods for global, component, and material systems are outlined and feedback generation is explained. Structural and fabrication feedback are classified, and their integration is described in detail. The Hybrid Flax Pavilion showcases a novel wood-natural-fibre hybrid construction system developed by the Cluster of Excellence IntCDC | University of Stuttgart. The unique hybrid system combines thin cross-laminated timber with robotically wound flax fibre bodies to create a novel, resource-efficient building structure made from regional, bio-based materials, resulting in the distinctive design of the pavilion's undulating roof. Open Postdoc Position: The Institute for Computational Design and Construction (ICD) at the University of Stuttgart invites applications for an open position as   POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER – Research Associate (m/f/d) E13/14 TVL   · to conduct postdoctoral research in the EU EIC Project “ArchiBioFoam” with a special focus on computational design and robotic additive fabrication processes to materialize architectural-scale components with tailored performance and autonomously actuating parts.   · to lead the ICD “ArchiBioFoam” project team of 2 PhD researcher and ensure successful research progress and interdisciplinary collaboration with the international project partners.   · to advance the ICD “Material Programming” research group by engaging in additional project initiatives and the Cluster of Excellence IntCDC | University of Stuttgart.
