🚀 🚀 🚀 Our portfolio company ProteinDistillery just achieved a major milestone with the closing of a whopping €15.0 million seed funding round to kickstart their first industry plant. With its MVP Prew:tein, a functional ingredient innovation derived from spent brewers yeast, the company enables its customers to replace less clean additives such as methyl cellulose, emulsifiers and stabilizers. Protein Distillery tackles some of the main challenges our food system faces in times of global supply chain disruption and climate change: ♻ Food waste reduction 🏭 Resilient local production 💹 Price competitive solution 🏅 Superior product quality This investment underlines the strategy of Green Generation Fund to back founders that are turning university research into commercial applications. In a short period of time, the team around Michael Baunach, Prof. Dr. Tomas Kurz, Christoph Pitter and Marco Ries did prove that they are able to scale from lab innovation on a scale level relevant for top tier food industry clients. We are looking forward to continue supporting the founders together with our co-investors and industry partners. Dr. Manon Sarah Littek Bernhard Van Lengerich, PhD. We're excited that our portfolio company, Libre Foods, announced their launch of the EU's first mycelium-based whole-muscle chicken breast. Months after their successful introduction of mushroom bacon in Spain, Libre Foods anticipates bringing their animal free chicken to the market by early next year. What sets Libre's chicken apart? 🌱 Clean Label: Made primarily from mycelium, Libre Chicken boasts 25% fewer calories than traditional chicken and offers over 25% more dietary fiber than both its animal and plant-based counterparts. ✅Regulatory Alignment: Libre Foods' chosen fungi strain isn't classified as a novel food, streamlining the regulatory process. The company has diligently ensured their products are in line with EU regulations – ensuring timely commercialisation. 🏷️ Competitive Pricing: Produced locally in Spain, this mycelium chicken will be priced more competitively than organic and plant-based chicken breasts. Libre's vision? Achieving price parity with conventional chicken in the next three years. 🌍 Sustainability at its Core: Libre Foods is the only company leveraging the entire fungi organism for its product range, utilizing upcycled materials and high-performing fungal strains to achieve industry-leading yields. By doing that they achieve industry-leading yields through innovative R&D and fermentation technology. At Green Generation Fund, we believe in the potential of mycelium and precision fermentation technologies for our food system - we're proud to support Libre Foods and Alan Iván Ramos in their journey to reshape the food industry, emphasizing sustainability, health, and innovation. #LibreFoods #MyceliumChicken #FoodInnovation

Green Generation Fund at #DLDAISummit and #DLDCircular 🌱🌍 Yesterday, our Founding Partner, Dr. Manon Sarah Littek, spoke about Green Tech and AI at this year's #DLD #Circular & #AISummit. Alongside Bernhard Kowatsch, Markus Löffler, David Kirkpatrick and Odin Mühlenbein, the discussion revolved around "How to Accelerate Impact with AI". 🔍 A few insights: - AI's transformative potential in the Green Tech and Food Tech sectors is undeniable. From making supply chains transparent to decarbonizing processes, the technology is setting new benchmarks in efficiency. - AI enables better renewable integration into grids, optimizes energy in buildings, and offers enhanced crop and fertilizer prediction in agriculture. The future of food hinges on innovations like precision farming and alternative protein development. AI is at the forefront, driving increased yield, resilience, and potentially revolutionizing the food industry. - By optimizing supply chains and food baskets, AI can lead to significant savings, both in terms of resources and finances (e.g. AI has already saved a World Food Program´s project 50 million dollars). - In the broader context of climate, AI proves invaluable. Through complex climate simulations, it facilitates prediction of extreme weather events and underpins strategies that bolster climate resilience. - While AI has transformative potential, it's essential to weigh in on the energy costs (can be substantial - so exploring the best use-cases is key) and other implications (e.g. ethical, social, etc.). AI is a tool, not a one-size-fits-all solution for climate change. It’s a tool for our toolbox, rather than a silverbullet. 💡 Dr. Manon Sarah Littek emphasized the importance of topics such as #foodasmedicine, #regenerativeagriculture, and #bioengineeredfoods. At Green Generation Fund, we believe in investing in areas that not only promise returns but also ensure a sustainable and robust food system for future generations. A heartfelt thank you to the DLD Conference team - Steffi Czerny, Heiko Schlott, Alessia Sinzger - and all the panelists for an enlightening discussion. Together, we can harness the power of AI to create a greener, more sustainable future.
