How can the "Hamburg Areal West" project unite tradition and modernity in a sustainable way? Our ‘Areal West’ project in the Altona district marks the final section of Hamburg's ‘pearl necklace’, which stretches from the fish auction hall to Övelgönne. This area, which is characterised by the traditional fishing industry, will unite tradition and modernity with our planned new development. Urban design & functions: The charm and history of the site should be preserved and integrated into the modern design. Our design for Areal West includes a diverse mix of uses that will revitalise the area and create a new centre for residents and visitors. At the heart of the neighbourhood, we are planning an open market hall that will expand and modernise the traditional fish and delicatessen offering. This market hall will be open seven days a week and will offer local specialities and artisan products in addition to fresh food. In addition to the market hall, the area will be complemented by studios and residential buildings that promote creative and urban life. The residential buildings will be positioned on a flood-proof plinth. Further buildings with catering, retail and offices round off the concept. A studio alley will further enliven the neighbourhood and offer artists and creative people space to develop. Schellfischplatz will be transformed into a central market square on the Elbe, inviting people to linger and enjoy themselves. The building heights are carefully adapted to the surrounding buildings in order to preserve the existing visual axes to the Elbe. Access to the parks on the banks of the Elbe has also been retained, which strengthens the recreational character of the area. A continuous riverside promenade along the Elbe will make it possible to experience the water up close and further increase the attractiveness of the area. Green concepts: Our architecture favours sustainable construction methods and innovative solutions. We are planning buildings with photovoltaic systems, green façades and roofs and effective water circulation systems. The mobility concept for the area places a special focus on cyclists and pedestrians, which will relieve the public space of cars and create a pleasant, safe environment. Project for: HHLA Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG

Allianz Park Stuttgart recognised with the Merit Award at the Chinese Real Estate Design Award 2024 The Chinese Real Estate Design Award (CREDAWARD) is an international architecture prize awarded in China that honours outstanding achievements and innovations in the field of real estate and architectural design. The award is presented to architects, design firms, developers and other professionals, setting global standards for the industry. Our Allianz Park project in Stuttgart was honoured with the Merit Award as a remarkable example of pioneering property and architectural design. Covering an area of 170,000 square metres, this park creates a sustainable, user-friendly and modern office space for 4,500 employees. The architectural design of the Allianz Park in Stuttgart is characterised by its innovative design and harmonious integration of different structures. A central solitary building is surrounded by organically shaped, lower 'satellites' that are connected underground. These structures have rounded floor plans that allow them to merge into an architectural unit. A horizontal glass façade envelops all the buildings and offers an unobstructed view of the surroundings. The park at the heart of the complex, with a 100-year-old oak tree, refers to the company's rich history and its strength and reliability. At the same time, this natural monument marks the central main entrance, the plaza. The plaza serves as a reception hall and event floor, from where employees and visitors are distributed to the individual areas of use in the building. Allianz Park is being developed by Allianz Deutschland AG as part of a comprehensive sustainability concept. The aim is to achieve DGNB Platinum certification, supported by photovoltaic systems on the roofs, a geothermal system to utilise geothermal energy and concrete core activation to improve the indoor climate. Another key factor is the positive impact on the urban climate thanks to the decision to have several buildings at different heights and their staggered arrangement, which allows air to flow freely into Stuttgart city centre. In Stuttgart-Vaihingen, a new building complex is being built on an area of 170,000 m² for Allianz AG, one of the largest insurers in the world. The new headquarters is scheduled for completion in 2025 and will provide space for around 4,500 employees. On the construction site, it is clear to see how the façade is taking shape and almost completely enveloping the building. The interior work is also making considerable progress and is in full swing. Further information about the project: Three individual buildings are grouped around a 100-year-old oak tree like a campus. A high-rise building, as an integrated solitaire, defines the central main entrance with the oak tree and thus emphasises the new location. The basement, which connects everything, with its central uses such as canteens, event and sports areas, offers the meeting and communication areas necessary for a modern company today. Allianz Deutschland AG is realising a complex sustainability concept with Allianz Park. The aim is to achieve DGNB platinum certification. Photovoltaic systems are installed on the roof surfaces, a geothermal system uses geothermal energy and concrete core activation helps to optimise the indoor climate. A key aspect of the Allianz design is its positive impact on the urban climate. This includes the decision in favour of several buildings at different heights instead of one compact large building, the rounded shape of the individual buildings and, most importantly, the staggered arrangement of the buildings on the site. These measures enable the best possible and unhindered air flow towards the city centre. Photo: ©Niels Schubert

Hot cities: climate-resilient construction as the key to adaptation. Increasing urbanisation and climate change are causing cities to become hotter and hotter. These so-called "hot cities" pose a challenge, as extreme temperatures affect the quality of life of residents and put a strain on infrastructure. In the current issue of SOUQ magazine, Thomas Lücking explains how climate-resilient construction can be used to respond to this development. Through climate-resilient construction, buildings and urban structures can withstand the effects of climate change and at the same time contribute to reducing heat islands. One example of this is the King Fahad National Library, which is characterised by an ornamental façade consisting of rhomboid-shaped textile sails. While traditional Saudi architecture often screens out natural daylight and sunlight and requires artificial lighting inside, the unusual façade structure specifically regulates the high levels of solar radiation. The roof zone is also part of the lighting system. It is equipped with narrow skylights and white plastic membranes that reflect direct sunlight and allow filtered daylight to flow into the interior in a controlled manner. Layered ventilation and floor cooling are particularly important for the interior. Only the lower three metres, which correspond to the actual occupied area, are kept at a pleasant temperature. Together with the square in front of it, the King Fahad National Library represents an unusual combination of traditional construction and climate and energy-sensitive design. Residential building on Tallin's coast honoured with recognition. Gerber Architekten has designed 4 residential buildings for the former shipyard site in Tallinn, which are arranged along the water's edge. Floor-to-ceiling glass surfaces create a flowing connection between the interior and exterior spaces and provide an unobstructed view of the coast, while a large esplanade in front forms a spacious recreational zone with a transition to the coastal landscape. The four building complexes are surrounded by an urban environment with a harbour, historic industrial architecture and a wide range of outdoor activities. The striking combination of glass surfaces with wood-panelled, closed wall sections enables the design of both open and discreet living situations in the stacked flats, which form open-plan living spaces.

Gerber Architekten is delighted that the topping-out ceremony for the new Chamber of Skilled Crafts building was celebrated last Wednesday, 5th of June 2024. The new building, which is being realised in close cooperation with the Chamber of Skilled Crafts, represents an important step towards expanding the Chamber's training and administration facilities. The innovative construction project includes modern training rooms, workshops and administrative areas that are optimally tailored to the needs of tomorrow's tradespeople. The new building will not only decisively improve the infrastructure of the Chamber of Skilled Crafts and set an example for the future of skilled crafts in Saarland. With its self-sufficient cubature, the new building supports Pingusson's construction and opens up to the listed park area of the former French Embassy, with two inner courtyards providing insights into the Chamber of Skilled Crafts' fields of work as glass showcase. We would like to thank everyone involved for their commitment and support and look forward to the completion of the project. A new building complex for Allianz AG is being built in Stuttgart-Vaihingen on an area of 170,000 m². The new headquarters will be completed in 2025 and will provide space for around 4,500 employees. The three buildings of the new Allianz Park are grouped around a new public space. This contains an old oak tree as a living monument to the stability of Allianz's 100-year history. The new working environments are characterised by a high degree of flexibility and transparency. Modern open-plan offices offer plenty of space for collaboration and exchange, while special think tanks support creative thinking. Quiet areas enable concentrated work and communication areas promote informal dialogue between employees. These diverse working environments contribute to a dynamic and inspiring working atmosphere. The organic design of the buildings makes it possible to create a freely flowing fresh air corridor that allows the air to circulate better. Sustainability is a central element of this project. The aim is to achieve DGNB Platinum certification, and the use of photovoltaics and geothermal systems for geothermal energy also enables a correspondingly environmentally friendly energy supply. Football and stadiums form an inseparable unit and are a prime example of team spirit and dynamic processes. In the field of architecture, projects also work best hand in hand. That is why we are always interested in supporting young talent, whether through active foundation work or small, special campaigns. To ensure that not only first-class stadiums are built, but that talented athletes also have a chance, we supported a tournament with 46 youth teams near Düsseldorf. Our support for the promotion of young athletes illustrates that we not only think about the buildings of tomorrow, but also about the people who will fill them with life. And our design for the Shenjiaji Sports Centre in China shows what a modern stadium of tomorrow can look like.

Foundation stone laid for new townhouse in Ahlen 'Elegant and subtle in its intricacies' The foundation stone for the new town hall in Ahlen was laid on 13 May 2024 as the first phase of the new civic campus. This was preceded by a planning phase that involved the active participation of local residents. The structure of the elongated, angled building block responds to its special location between the Werse riverside promenade and Ahlen's historic town wall. From the building, which is divided into sections of different heights, you can enjoy the view of the neighbouring city park and the historic old town. Mayor Dr Alexander Berger (2nd from right) particularly emphasised the energy efficiency and quality of the space and usage concept of the new building, which is designed to meet contemporary needs and is due to be occupied in 2026.
