EMBL, with the Institut Pasteur, The Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden, MIMS, the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research, and the Wellcome Sanger Institute, has launched a new funding initiative called ‘Amplifying Funds in Infection Biology’ to strengthen interdisciplinarity and collaboration in infection biology in Europe. The co-funding is intended for research groups from these specific partner institutions to bring together different expertise. Successful applications will include at least one EMBL partner and at least one collaborator from these specific organisations that are providing fund matching. Each project will investigate vital aspects of infection biology, such as pathogen-specific protein machines, host-pathogen interactions at different scales, human genetics influencing infection susceptibility, and innovative approaches to combat antimicrobial resistance. Application deadline: 25 October 2024 Further information: https://lnkd.in/ePtna_FJ

EMBL welcomes Bulgaria as a new prospect member state! This is an important milestone that will open up new opportunities for scientific exchange and collaboration between EMBL and Bulgaria. It will support Bulgaria’s scientific community by allowing its researchers to take full advantage of EMBL’s facilities, training, and professional network, which extends beyond EMBL’s six sites into its many member states and alliances. Including Bulgaria, EMBL is now supported by 29 full member states, one associate member state, and two prospect member states. https://lnkd.in/eG-zEU5F Science Directorate, Ministry of Education and Science | Ministry of Education and Science, Bulgaria | Mikaela Stancheva | Stoyno Stoynov

Researchers at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) in Genoa and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Grenoble have unveiled how gene expression can be modulated using small molecules. The study focused on splicing, one of the key levels of control in gene expression that enables functional RNA versions to act as a set of instructions to produce proteins, or directly as regulators of various cellular processes. These results lay the groundwork for the future identification of potential drugs that act directly on genetic mutations or modifications responsible for the onset of tumours or genetic diseases. https://lnkd.in/e3e5zEbt Ilaria Silvestri Marco Marcia Marco De Vivo

We were delighted to participate in this meeting. During one of the panel discussions, EMBL Director General Edith Heard spoke about the role of molecular biology in addressing human and planetary health challenges, such as pandemic and infections.
Highlights from the Transatlantic Big Science Conference 2024 in Berlin! Our CEO, Matthias H. Tschöp, led an insightful session on pandemic preparedness, addressing global disease threats, and strengthening international scientific resilience during crises. 🔬🌍 We were joined by esteemed experts from the World Health Organization, EMBL, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and CEPI (Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations) for this crucial discussion. The Transatlantic Big Science Conference aspires to create opportunities to renew and reinvigorate historic collaborations between scientists and organizations on both sides of the Atlantic and to empower transnational research communities to pursue transformational, sustainable solutions to global grand challenges. #GlobalHealth #PandemicPreparedness

At EMBL Rome, friends and family of alumnus Riccardo Cortese found a fitting way to remember an impactful scientist and mentor, while continuing to inspire a next generation of scientists. The ‘Summer in Science’ programme in 2022 that provided a unique, immersive science learning experience for teenagers, would not have been possible without this support.
