The latest batch of EU grants includes the 2000th project to receive ERC Proof of Concept funding: #DeepSpacePULSE from Nanda Rea, which aims to create a new space navigation system.👇 Prof Rea, an astrophysicist working at CSIC and the Institute of Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC) in Spain, will manage this milestone project. She and her team will use the funding to test the viability of a new navigation system, to be used to guide exploratory spacecraft (such as satellites) on long-term deep-space missions. This system will leverage the GPS attributes of pulsar stars to create a small, light, autonomous navigation unit which aims to be competitive in both the public and private space markets. The ERC funds top researchers in Europe, of any nationality, helping them pursue great ideas at frontiers of knowledge.
About us
Set up in 2007 by the European Union, the European Research Council (ERC) aims to stimulate scientific excellence in Europe by encouraging competition for funding between the very best, creative researchers of any nationality and age from anywhere in the world. As part of Horizon Europe, the EU programme for research and innovation for 2021 to 2027, the ERC has a total budget of over €16 billion. The ERC has an 'investigator-driven', 'bottom-up' approach, which allows researchers to identify new opportunities in any field of research (Physical Sciences and Engineering, Life Sciences and Social Sciences and Humanities). On the sole basis of excellence, the ERC provides attractive long-term funding to individual top scientists and their teams to pursue ground-breaking research. The funded projects are expected to lead to scientific advances and to set clear and inspirational targets for frontier research across the world. By supporting the brightest minds, the ERC grants help to bring about new and unpredictable scientific and technological discoveries in Europe.

Happy World Youth Skills Day! 🤹♀️ Did you know that success in your professional life largely depends on your family and skills learned as a child? Today, as we celebrate the importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, ERC grantee Pedro Carneiro from UCL reminds us of the urgency of investing in children to make sure they acquire the vital skills to secure better jobs and achieve success in life. His research on family dynamics and expenditure in impoverished communities reveals that without a solid foundation of skills acquired in childhood, it becomes more difficult to address skill deficiencies and their consequences in terms of (un)employment in adulthood. Will you be watching the #EURO2024 final tonight? We hope its not too stressful.... Hendrik Sager has uncovered links between mental stress and physical troubles, including cardiovascular disease. His research group arranged for blood samples to be taken from 35 healthy fans during a #football match, before and immediately after the game. Analysis showed a rapid depletion of white blood cells known as leukocytes, which could eventually lead to heart attack or other coronary troubles. Bonne fête du 14 juillet à toute la France ! Almost three centuries after pushing the gates of the Bastille prison open, France is pushing the frontiers of knowledge by having hosted more than 1,800 ERC projects since 2007. ⛪One of those is currently engaging with virtual reality to study a monument of world-renown: the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral. Introducing a pioneering approach in computational modelling and digitisation, Livio De Luca from CNRS - Centre national de la recherche scientifique and his team benefit from the exceptional experimental framework of the scientific worksite on Notre-Dame de Paris to build an emblematic corpus of data on scientific practices in heritage science. With a team of researchers coming from disciplines like archaeology, architecture, history, chemistry, or computer science, the research dives into the digital age by bridging the gap between physical objects as massive and complex as the Notre-Dame cathedral and the knowledge for understanding it. 🧠 Bernhard Spitzer's research on how the brain stores information could lead to treatments for those struggling with everyday tasks. Using eye-tracking, brain scans, and non-invasive techniques, his team aims to decipher working memory's neural underpinnings. Next, they'll analyse data from electrodes in non-human primates' brains to understand memory at the single-cell level. “We hope to better understand how working memory provides the right info at the right time,” says Spitzer. 👉 https://bit.ly/3RPOAj4 EU Science, Research and Innovation Max Planck Society #FrontierResearch #ERCAdG
