Exploring the Future of #DeepTech: GP Lise Rechsteiner, PhD and Maybrit Martschin from Gründerszene talked about key insights into deep tech investing, which companies, who are not in our Portfolio, you should watch, and what an #AIStartup has to possess for her to consider it deep tech. Notable European startups like Isar Aerospace and IQM Quantum Computers are making significant strides. The tentative program to our #GREENPHOTONICS Workshop in #Jena, May 27 - 29, 2024 is online. The local co-organizer is Fraunhofer IOF which will open its doors for our continuously growing community. #GreenPhotonics, what does that mean? #Photonics is a key enabling technology. Why might that be considered green? Here are some examples each individual knows from daily life in a very simple (non-scientific manner): ☀ Solar energy - The sun is for free and used to transform light into electrical power, which can be simply harvested, of course, when the sun is shining. 💻 Communication and social networking - You want to be connected to your friends and colleagues all over the world at any time, have online meetings, share photos, video, thoughts? Optical communication not only reduces the energy consumption and cuts down cost significantly, but also provides larger bandwidth and faster connections. The vision of Akhetonics is to providing #OpticalComputing. While these examples are easy to understand by any individual, here are some more - from an individual point of view more exotic - examples where photonics plays a crucial role in reducing greenhouse gases and our individual #environmental footprint and also help to support us to stay healthy: 😎 Fusion might provide a cleaner way of producing energy reliably, however, this technology zoo is still in its infancy, although many breakthroughs have been achieved in the last years. Teams all over the world are researching different approaches for fusion reactors, some involve lasers to initiate fusion, others involve magnetic fields using high-temperature superconducting materials, the latter of which again can be fabricated using lasers, as demonstrated by Coherent Corp.. 🚰 Water - According to the United Nations, about 3 bn people depend on water of unknown quality, causing serious health problems. Typical water analyses procedures need days to weeks to deliver a result. Point-of-issue (POI) testing is needed at high sensitivity and fast response. Ultra-fast optical detection to detect pathogens and microbes in water and other fluids, revolutionizing water analysis, is available, as shown by FluIDect. Did you know that ever digital device is hiding a dark secret? That almost every digital device processes and interacts with analog signals? 😨 Be it a sensor, your networking device using PAM4, audio or even your memory storage, you find analog signals everywhere. And to process these digitally, you need an analog-to-digital converter (ADC). But these only exist for electronics. If you want to process high-bandwidth optical signals, you are out of luck and need to waste a lot of energy and latency converting between the domains... for now. We are excited to announce our project to create the first all-optical analog-to-digital converter (OADC)! 🎛 Converting analog to digital signals (and vice-versa) is a crucial component of every computer. And with Akhetonics on the path to create the first all-optical computer, we, of course, need an all-optical ADC. This will not only enable any digital circuit to interact with our analog world, but most importantly, enable high bandwidth, low power and near latency-free networking! We are excited to receive the funding for the development of our OADC from the EU and Investitionsbank Berlin (IBB)! Expect more to come in the near future #Photonics #OpticalComputing #ADC
