Want a big job even with a traditional OEM? Increasingly, you need to have EV success on your resume. What do the following have in common: Martin Sander, new board member for sales, marketing and after sales at Volkswagen Frank-Steffen Dr. Walliser, new CEO at Bentley Motors Sherry House, CFO elect at Ford Motor Company Luca Napolitano, new chief sales and marketing officer at Stellantis Christine Feuell, new CEO at RAM Rory Harvey, new president, global markets at General Motors Dr. Manfred Harrer, new executive vice-president and head of Genesis & Performance Development Tech unit at Hyundai Motor Company (현대자동차)? All are fast-rising executives at so-called legacy OEMs that have been hired or promoted at least in part because of their experience in successfully driving electrification initiatives. The leadership teams, and in time the boardrooms too, of automotive firms are changing. C-suites that knew only of ICE coming up will age out and their replacements will need to have the skills required for a future when most sales will be electrified, if not fully electric. So don't believe anything you read about OEMs turning their back on the e-mobility revolution. Their hiring trends tell you they know they're only just beginning. This meeting was an important milestone. We were glad to participate in the dialogue on behalf of the automotive manufacturers together with the member states representatives and the stakeholder communities from CCAM Association, Conference of European Directors of Roads (CEDR), ERTICO - ITS Europe, CLEPA - European Association of Automotive Suppliers Europe is undergoing a significant transformation, moving towards sustainability and embracing a major digital shift. Connected and automated vehicles are part of the solution, promising to revolutionise our sector by lowering transport costs, reducing environmental impact, increasing safety and enhancing working conditions. To make this a reality, Europe needs the right enabling conditions, including -Adopting pan-European rules on testing supporting type approval; -Ensuring EU road infrastructure supports high-level connected and automated driving; -Aligning private and public investments for R&D in connected and automated driving technologies to drive standardisation. By embracing this technology, Europe can lead in this exciting field. Now is the time to drive progress in connected and automated driving technologies and move into a new era of mobility.

↘ Germany is losing its position as the leading European market for e-mobility in terms of vehicle volume sold. 🚗 While new BEV registrations in Germany fell by 14% to 81 thousand units, the United Kingdom recorded growth of 11% to 84 thousand BEVs. 🚗France also reported a strong increase of 24% to 80 thousand BEVs. Even if you include PHEVs, the United Kingdom with 127 thousand new registrations is just ahead of Germany with 126 thousand EVs and France with 119 thousand EVs. 📰 EU new-car market falls with double-digit BEV decline - In March, a total of 1.03 million new-car registrations were recorded in the EU. This was the first time since June 2023 that the market surpassed over one million deliveries. However, a year-on-year decline of 5.2% was still seen across the bloc. - Figures from the European Automobile Manufacturers'​ Association (ACEA) show that this was underscored by negative results from the region’s big four markets. #Germany suffered a 6.2% drop year on year followed by #Spain (down 4.7%), #Italy (down 3.7%), and #France (down 1.5%). - Other markets posted double-digit declines compared with March 2023. This included Sweden (down 21%), Ireland (down 17%), the Czech Republic (down 15.5%) and Belgium (down 13.5%) slumped. - Only five countries in the EU recorded growth in March. However, these were smaller markets with four or five-digit registration totals. Portugal and Poland posted gains of 6.2% and 0.9% respectively. - Meanwhile, Bulgaria (up 29.2%) and Hungary (up 12.2%) also enjoyed double-digit increases. With one more unit registered last month compared with March 2023, Slovenia also achieved growth. Instructive for every European, from consumer to car maker, to read the highly positive review by Steve Fowler of Geely's new EV small car it has cheekily named the Panda (although Stellantis will have something to say about that). Looks like it fills the huge, glaring market gap left -astonishingly - by Western car makers, for a seriously cheap but practical 4-seat(just) BEV city car; but one capable of doing slightly longer journeys (124 mile claimed range) and up to 50mph on highway. And all that for what may well turn out in the UK almost to match the price of Citroen's £7.5k-plus, max 30mph, 2 seat, 50-mile range Ami quadricycle. In terms of European producers, next step up from Ami will be Dacia's EV Duster coming in the summer - at £15k- plus. It's time to up the game, chaps. For the many well-intentioned consumers refraining from buying Chinese on principle, the temptation to succumb is poised to become far, far harder to resist.

#VW, #Renault pull plug on #electric Twingo Renault CEO Luca de Meo calls the decision "a lost opportunity." #France's #Renault and its #German peer, Volkswagen Group, have ended their talks to jointly develop an affordable #fullelectric version of the Twingo, Renault CEO Luca de Meo told Reuters on Wednesday, 22 Mai 2024. "I wanted to show that #European industry could work together as a #team, so I think this is a lost opportunity, but there may be others," De Meo said on the sidelines of the Vivatech summit in #Paris, confirming an earlier Reuters report. Volkswagen declined to comment. A #partnership between Volkswagen and Renault would have brought together household names from the euro zone's top two economies and formed a counterweight to Asian rivals muscling into the European market. The collapse of #negotiations could mean the German #carmaker may have to go it alone in developing its own affordable electric vehicle. Renault will continue designing its electric Twingo, scheduled to hit the market in 2026.
