European Biogas Association

Renewable Energy Semiconductor Manufacturing

The European Biogas Association is the leading European non-governmental organisation promoting renewable gas in Europe.

About us

European Biogas Association (EBA) was founded in February 2009 as a Belgian non-profit organisation aiming to promote the deployment of sustainable biogas production and use in Europe. This covers all energetic applications of biogas like heat, electricity and automotive fuel. EBA’s membership comprises national biogas associations, institutes and companies from over 20 countries all across Europe. The member associations cover the majority of producers, companies, consultants and researchers in the field of biogas within Europe. EBA’s strategy defines three priorities: establish biogas as an important part of Europe’s energy mix, promote source separation of household waste to increase the gas potential and support the production of biomethane as vehicle fuel.

  • With new faces stepping in post-EU elections, it is crucial to introduce the biogas sector and its key role in realising a vision for a greener and more sustainable Europe. 🌱 What is biogas? It is a renewable energy source produced from organic matter such as household and industrial waste, sewage sludge, urban wastewater, and manure. This process supports the shift to circularity by turning waste into valuable energy, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. Biogas can provide renewable heat and power as well as green fuel. The residues from biogas production also offer significant benefits: bio-CO2 can be reused in various industries, and the nutrient-rich matter left behind in the digester is ideal for organic farming, completing the cycle of organic waste use. 🎥 Watch our video to find out more. #biogas #biomethane #sustainable

  • This September, EBA will publish the first-ever members-only Manual on applicable EU legislation and standards for the biogases sector. Join us for an exclusive members-only launch webinar on 3 September to get a quick introduction to the Manual. The biogases industry crosscuts many sectors, including agriculture, waste management, heating, and transport. Navigating the complex EU regulatory framework is crucial for the success of any biogas or biomethane project. Our comprehensive Biogas Manual covers key questions such as: 🔹 What does EU law state about the use of agricultural feedstock? 🔹 What sustainability criteria should I apply to my new production project? 🔹 Are there requirements for the storage of digestate? 🔹 How does the EU incentivise the use of biomethane in transport? 🔹 How can the EU support financially my projects? 🔹 ..and many others on financing, heating, transport, and procurement. 💧 In our latest article of the "Biogas Breakthroughs: Europe's Green Energy Future" series, we explore how biogases are contributing to a climate-resilient water system. Climate change is intensifying water stress with unpredictable rainfall and shrinking ice sheets. These disruptions in the water cycle could drastically change our lives. But there is hope! The biogases value chain, closely linked with water cycles, offers multi-faceted solutions: 🌱 Supports wastewater recovery and water purification 🌾 Enhances soil health 🚜 Provides new water sources for irrigation With climate change increasing the severity of droughts and altering precipitation patterns, European agriculture and soil health face significant threats. Today, 60-70% of European soils are unhealthy due to climate change. A holistic approach is crucial for addressing water stress as part of climate change mitigation. The whole European bioeconomy, including the biogases value chain, will need to assess their efforts to tackle this global challenge. 📖 Read the full article below. #biogas #CleanWater #WaterCrisis #WaterStrategy #WaterWiseEU

#Biomethane is gaining momentum in Europe. Harmonising block-wide policies could bring the #EU closer to its #renewableenergy targets and allow more companies to choose renewable gas. We talked to Anthony Lorin, Senior Policy Analyst at the European Biogas Association, about what should happen to develop a single biomethane market in Europe and what consumers stand to gain. "More supply available beyond national borders could eventually achieve lower prices for buyers. It will also make it easier for industrial consumers to secure the necessary supply," Anthony explained. "Standardising the documentation for compliance and voluntary markets would streamline biomethane procurement." Thank you, Anthony, for such an illuminating chat! 📣 The latest European Biomethane Map is out, showcasing impressive growth: Europe has reached an installed capacity of 6.4 bcm of biomethane per year. 81% of the capacity corresponds to plants located in the European Union (5.2 bcm). The EU-27 countries’ growth has reached 37%, while the capacity of the non-EU countries analysed grew by 20% compared to the 2022-2023 dataset. 📈 The map features 1,548 biomethane plants. This represents a 32% growth in the number of plants in Europe compared to the previous edition, which featured 1,174 units. Over 80% of the reported biomethane plants are now connected to the gas grid, with nearly half of them (49%) connected to the distribution grid and 14% to the transportation grid. 📍 France is one of the countries leading the biomethane scaleup pathway and has nearly doubled its capacity compared to the previous edition of this map. Italy has also shown significant growth, increasing its number of plants four-fold and its total plant capacity more than threefold, while the United Kingdom and Denmark maintain their positions among the top five biomethane producers in Europe. Germany remains the biggest biomethane producer, but has paused the construction of new plants. The momentum in the biomethane sector aligns closely with the 2030 objectives set forth in the REPowerEU plan. 📌 €25 billion in private investments have been so far secured by 2030 and this will result in the installation of 950 new biomethane plants. 🗺️ Explore the interactive map for more insights into Europe’s biomethane production capacity: https://lnkd.in/eQrfNjfA #biogas #biomethane #REPowerEU GIE

  • 🚀 Calling for a stronger Europe’s future competitiveness through collaborative research, development, and innovation. The European Biogas Association, along with 109 European associations, urges the EU to boost RD&I investment in the next European Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (FP10). Why does this matter? 🔍 Global tech race: The EU is lagging behind in RD&I investments compared to global competitors. This gap hinders the EU’s scientific and technological potential. For the sake of its long-term competitiveness, the EU needs to do more to attract and retain private RD&I investments in Europe. 🔗 The EU Framework Programme: This initiative is crucial in tackling market failures and stimulating private RD&I by lowering the risks that such investments represent for the industry. 📊 Proven impact: Horizon 2020 showed that EU partnerships achieved the highest financial leverage, doubling or tripling private partner contributions. We need to continue this momentum. Our calls to action: 1. Increase the current RD&I budget for FP10 to enhance Europe’s tech leadership. 2. Ensure national RD&I investments meet or exceed 3% of GDP, leveraging private sector investment. 3. Strengthen FP10’s Pillar II to build long-term public-private partnerships, reduce risks, and stimulate private investment in Europe to support EU green and digital transitions.
