Finding and setting the correct MTU for your PC and router is one of the most important tweaks you can make to your network. An improper MTU can cause a multitude of problems ranging from email to browsing to using a VPN. When you set your MTU you must make sure the MTU is identical on all PC NICs and your router. To find your optimum MTU please click here.

Not all Netgear routers provide a common interface. The steps below are typical of the more common routers however, your actual screens may vary. Consult the Netgear Technical Support Page for your particular router setup.

Step 1
Netgear provides a setup wizard to help configure the router. Log in to the web based interface by typing 192.168.0.1 in your browser URL field. Enter "admin" and "password" in the Username and Passowrd fields, respectively. Username and passord are case sensitive. Click OK.

Step 2
Go to the WAN Setup menu. Select Custom next to MTU Size and enter the desired MTU in the ajoining box. Click Apply.

Additional Notes: If you are experiencing problems related to MTU you should also adjust the MTU on all PCs and Servers connected to the network.

  • Thanks for the info on setting up the Motorola 2210 w/ a Netgear router. I actually had a problem and ending up calling ATT, and sure enough (just like you said), the tech insisted that if the modem was connected to the router and both were reset, then the modem would default to bridged mode. I kept telling him it didn't do that and finally got off the phone, ran through your steps one last time and it all worked perfectly. My initial issue all came down to a stupid typo on my part, so there was nothing wrong w/ your steps. Thanks again.
